The Best of Mozart

Eine kleine Nachtmusik

Eine kleine Nachtmusik is one of Mozart’s best-known works. It was composed in 1787, during the last year of Mozart’s life. The piece is written for a chamber ensemble of two violins, viola, and cello, with a double bass playing colla parte with the cello.

The work is in four movements, all in sonata form:
Allegro – The first movement is in sonata form and is the best known of the four movements. The main theme is introduced by the first violin and is immediately echoed by the second violin. The theme is then taken up by the viola and cello in turn.
Romanza – The second movement is a slow, lyrical theme and variation movement in G major. The main theme is introduced by the first violin and then taken up by the other instruments in turn. There are four variations on the main theme.
Menuetto – The third movement is a minuet and trio, with the minuet in Dmajor and the trio in G major. The minuet is played by the violin 1, viola, and cello, with the double bass playing colla parte with the cello. After a repeat of the minuet section, the trio section is played by violin 1, viola, and cello.
Finale – The fourth movement is in sonata form and is Allegro molto. It features a highly infectious main theme that will stick in your head long after you’ve heard it!

Symphony No. 40

Symphony No. 40, K. 550, is a symphony by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It was written in 1788 and is one of only two symphonies he wrote in minor keys (the other being No. 25, composed earlier the same year). The date of completion of the symphony is known exactly, since Mozart in his notes wrote “finished on 25 July 1788 at half past 2 in the morning”.

Turkish March

The Turkish March is one of Mozart’s best-known piano pieces. It was composed in 1783, during Mozart’s stay in Vienna. The piece is written in the key of A Minor and is in 3/4 time. Für Elise

“Für Elise” (German for “For Elise”) is one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most popular compositions. It is usually classified as a bagatelle, but it is also sometimes referred to as an Albumblatt. The piece was not published until 1867, 40 years after the composer’s death in 1827.

The earliest manuscript of “Für Elise” was found in the possession of Ludwig van Beethoven’s secretary and biographer Anton Schindler. Schindler claimed that the original score had been torn up by Beethoven in a rage, and that he had pieced it back together from memory.
