The Gospel Reggae Movement

What is Gospel Reggae?

Gospel reggae is a subgenre of Christian reggae, originating in Jamaica, which mixes the religion’s rhetoric with reggae’s musical style and/or tempo. The music’s main purpose is to deliver a message of hope, love and peace.

The earliest form of gospel reggae was created in the late 1960s by Jamaican artist Derick Brackenridge, who recorded the song “Operation Radication” under the name Derrick Harriott. The song became popular in Jamaican churches and was later covered by American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.

The genre began to gain popularity in the 1980s with the release of album Zion Train by British reggae artist Patience Genesis 1:29. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1984.

Other notable artists who have popularized gospel reggae include Jamaican artist Carlene Davis, who released the album Ark Angel in 1992, and American artist Lauryn Hill, who recorded the song “Joyful Joyful” for the soundtrack of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993).

Gospel reggae is a subgenre of reggae music that began in the 1970s in Jamaica. It is characterized by a Christian lyrical content, and is often sung in Jamaican Patois. It is often associated with the Rastafari movement, but not all artists who record gospel reggae are Rastafarians.

The first gospel reggae song was “Who So Ever Will” by The Soul Crusaders, recorded in 1973. The first album of gospel reggae was Jah B’s Words of Wisdom, released in 1977. The best-known artist from the early period was Errol Dunkley, whose 1977 hit “OK Fred” (a cover of a John Holt song) reached number one on the Jamaican charts. Dunkley was not a Rastafarian, but his album Black Man’s Pride 2 (1988) included collaborations with Rastafarian artists such as Buju Banton and Anthony B.

During the 1980s and 1990s, gospel reggae saw renewed interest with the rise of artists such as Carlene Davis, Dawn Penn, Garnet Silk and Levi Roots. In the 2000s, the genre has been taken up by a new generation of artists such as Shiraz Sattaur (known as “Shizzle”), Evangelist Nonyerem Android and Lovindeer.
