Download the app

First things first, using YouTube Music requires downloading the app. You can find YouTube Music in the App Store (for iOS devices) or Google Play Store (for Android devices), or you can go to music.youtube.com. Once it’s downloaded, open the app and sign in with your Google account. You may be asked to verify your identity with a text or call from Google.

Create a YouTube Music account

In order to use YouTube Music, you’ll need to create a Google account if you don’t already have one. You can do this by going to the YouTube Music website and clicking on the “Sign in” button in the top-right corner. On the following page, click on the “Create account” link beneath the sign-in form.

Enter your first and last name, date of birth, gender, and a valid email address. Then, click on the “Next step” button.

On the next page, you’ll be asked to create a password for your account. Make sure to choose a strong password that you haven’t used for any other online accounts. Once you’ve entered your password, click on the “Next step” button again.

Finally, you’ll need to verify your phone number by entering it into the form and clicking on the “Send verification code” button. Once you receive the code via text message, enter it into the form and click on the “Verify” button.

The Home screen

The home screen is the first thing you’ll see when you open YouTube Music. It’s designed to give you everything you need at a glance, and make it easy to control your listening experience with just a few taps.

The home screen has three sections – Your Mixtapes, Recommended, and Trending.

Your Mixtapes is where you’ll find all of the music mixes that you’ve created, as well as any mixes that have been shared with you. This is a great place to start if you want to find something specific.

Recommended is where you’ll find music that YouTube Music thinks you’ll like based on your listening history. This section includes new releases from artists you listen to, as well as music that’s similar to what you’ve been listening to.

Trending is where you’ll find the most popular songs on YouTube Music right now. This section is updated every day, so there’s always something new to discover.

The Library

The Library is where you access all of the music that you have either uploaded to YouTube Music or added from YouTube. You can also find anything that you’ve “liked” on YouTube here. To access your library, tap the three lines in the top left corner of the app and then select “Library.”

In the Library, there are four sections – “Songs,” “Albums,” “Artists,” and “Genres & Moods.” Songs are all of the individual tracks that you have in your library. Albums are any albums that you have saved, as well as any albums that individual songs belong to. Artists contains all of the artists in your library, both individually and as part of an album or compilation. Last, Genres & Moods is a collection of playlists organized by genre or mood.

The Explore tab

The Explore tab is your gateway to finding new music on YouTube Music. You can explore by genre, mood, activity, or what’s trending. Genres and moods are based on our understanding of the world of music, and they’re constantly evolving.Activity is based on the kinds of things you do while you listen to music. For example, if you’re working out, we’ll surface different content than if you’re driving or relaxing.

The Trending section shows what’s popular on YouTube Music right now. This includes newly released songs, albums, and artists that are rising in popularity. You can also find playlists made by our team of experts for different moments and occasions.

YouTube Music vs. other streaming services

YouTube Music is a streaming service that offers ad-supported and ad-free access to millions of songs and albums. It’s available on mobile, desktop, and smart speakers. You can create and share your own playlists, and listen to radio stations based on your mood or activity. YouTube Music is also integrated with YouTube, so you can watch music videos and live performances.

Spotify

Spotify is a digital, cross-platform music streaming service offering users a variety of content from Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal. Content can be browsed through or searched for by parameters such as artist, album, genre, playlist, or record label. Users can create, edit and share playlists, as well as follow other users’ playlists. Spotify offers integration with many social networking sites, including Facebook, with which it plays interactive features.

The company was founded in Stockholm, Sweden. It has offices in 20 countries including the United States, U.K., Germany, France and Australia. Spotify went public on the New York Stock Exchange on 3 April 2018 under the ticker SPOT.

Apple Music

Apple Music is a streaming service that launched in 2015. It offers access to over 45 million songs, as well as exclusive content from artists like Taylor Swift and Drake. Apple Music also has a feature called “For You” which personalized recommendations based on your taste. There is also a ” radioactive ” section which features the most popular songs on the platform. The service costs $9.99/month for an individual subscription, or $14.99/month for a family subscription (up to 6 people).

Amazon Music

Though Amazon Music is a streaming service like YouTube Music, it offers a very different experience. Amazon Music is part of the larger Amazon ecosystem, which includes the Amazon Prime shopping service and the Kindle e-book reader. This means that if you’re an Amazon Prime member, you have access to a large library of songs and albums at no additional cost. Amazon Music also integrates with the company’s Echo line of smart speakers, allowing you to play music with just your voice.

YouTube Music premium features

YouTube Music is a new music streaming service made by YouTube. It has three tiers: free, ad-supported; YouTube Music Premium, a $9.99 monthly subscription with ad-free and background listening; and YouTube Premium, which combines ad-free, background listening, and access to YouTube Originals for $11.99 a month.

Background listening

You can keep listening to music on YouTube Music even when you’re not actively using the app. This is perfect for when you’re doing other things on your phone, like checking your email or browsing the web. To turn this feature on, open the YouTube Music app and go to Settings. Then, toggle on the background play option.

Download songs and albums

Download songs and albums

With YouTube Music Premium, you can download songs and albums to your mobile device. This way, you can keep listening even if you’re not connected to the internet.

To download a song or album:
1. Tap the download icon next to the song or album.
2. The downloaded content will appear in Offline mixtapes in the Library tab.

Play music offline

You can download songs, albums, and playlists to your mobile device to listen to them without an internet connection.

If you’re a YouTube Music Premium member, you can listen to music offline by downloading it to your device. This way, you can keep listening even if you leave an area with Wi-Fi or run out of data on your mobile plan. When you download music, it’ll be stored on your device and you’ll be able to access it anytime, even if you’re not connected to the internet.

You can download up to 100 songs per device, on a maximum of 10 different devices. You can also download music back onto any device that you’ve used before if it’s still signed in with your account.

The bottom line

Even if you’re not a YouTube Music subscriber, the app is still worth having on your phone. It’s not just a good streaming music service — it’s a portal into one of the biggest entertainment platforms in the world. And it’s only getting better.

Cons

There are some definite cons to using YouTube Music. One is that you can only stream songs from YouTube Music’s library, which is significantly smaller than Spotify or Apple Music. This means you might not be able to find your favorite artists or songs.

Another downside is that YouTube Music doesn’t have a free version like Spotify does. You have to sign up for YouTube Music Premium, which costs $9.99 per month, in order to use it without ads. Lastly, some users have complained about YouTube Music’s interface, saying it’s not as user-friendly as Spotify or Apple Music.
