The Temptations – Ball of Confusion (That’s What the World Is Today)

The Temptations are an American vocal group who released a number of successful singles and albums with Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. The group’s work with producer Norman Whitfield, beginning with the Top 10 hit single “Cloud Nine” in October 1966, pioneered psychedelic soul, and was significant in developing the subgenre. They were distinguished for their choreography, onstage fashions, and use of ProTools-backed vocals. The group members are known for their danceable sounds and Looks that stimulated popular trends of the 1960s.

The band’s membership fluctuated over the years, with Michael Bivins (bass vocalist) joining after the departure of Otis Williams (baritone lead vocalist). Dennis Edwards (tenor lead vocalist) replaced Bivins in 1968; however, it was not until Paul Williams (second tenor lead vocalist) replaced Melvin Franklin (bass singer) in 1971 that the classic lineup was solidified.Other notable members include Ali-Ollie Woodson (tenor/destined baritone lead singer), who replaced Edwards from 1984 to 1988; Glen Goins (baritone/tenor lead singer), who replaced Woodson from 1977 to1978;and Ralph Johnson (baritone/tenor lead singer), who replaced Goins from 1978 to 1983.

Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On

Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” is a landmark record for so many reasons. It was the first successful concept album in popular music, and it tackled social issues like racism, poverty, and the Vietnam War with a level of maturity and insight that was unprecedented in pop music. The album was also a commercial success, spending an astonishing 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200. “What’s Going On” is one of the most important and influential soul records of all time, and it remains one of Marvin Gaye’s best-loved songs.

Curtis Mayfield – Super Fly

Curtis Mayfield’s Super Fly is one of the most important and influential soul albums of all time. Released in 1972, the album was a massive critical and commercial success, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 and selling over three million copies. Super Fly is frequently cited as one of the best soul albums of the 1970s, and its impact extends to today – it was sampled heavily by hip hop artists in the 1990s and 2000s, and was ranked #336 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
