One of the most notable trends in rock music in 2010 was the return of “arena rock” bands, characterized by their use of grandiose sounds and stadiums as their primary concert venues. These bands, including Muse, Fleet Foxes, and Arcade Fire, were some of the year’s most commercially successful acts. From big ticket events like Coachella and Lollapalooza to more intimate gatherings like Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, 2010 was a year to remember. Coachella:
This annual event takes place in California and features some of the biggest names in music. This year’s lineup included headliners Jay-Z, Muse, Gorillaz, and LCD Soundsystem. With nearly 200 bands playing over three days, Coachella is one of the biggest and best music festivals in the world.

Lollapalooza:

January
The month started off with a bang, as both Guns N’ Roses and Van Halen announced plans to release new albums in 2010. GNR’s “Chinese Democracy” finally saw the light of day in November, while Van Halen’s long-awaited “A Different Kind of Truth” is set for release in February.

In other news, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx entered rehab for the second time in two years, and Slash filed for divorce from wife Perla Ferrar.

February
March saw the passing of two music legends: Ronnie James Dio and Alex Chilton. Dio, who rose to fame with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, died of stomach cancer at the age of 67. Chilton, best known for his work with Big Star, died of a heart attack at the age of 59.

In happier news, Ozzy Osbourne announced plans to reunite with Black Sabbath for a new album and world tour. The tour kicks off in May 2012.

March
April brought some sad news for Stone Temple Pilots fans, as frontman Scott Weiland was fired from the band after more than 15 years. Weiland was replaced by Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington. STP wasted no time getting back on the road, embarking on a North American tour in May.
June saw Metallica making headlines for all the wrong reasons when frontman James Hetfield entered rehab for alcohol addiction. The rockers were forced to cancel several shows on their world tour as a result.

July brought some good news for Green Day fans as the band announced plans to release three new albums over the next four months. “¡Uno!,” “¡Dos!,” and “¡Tré!” are set for release on September 25th, November 13th, and January 15th respectively. Green Day also embarked on a short North American tour in support of ¡Uno!.
