The 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards were held on April 28th in Miami and the winners have been announced! See who took home the top prizes in the biggest night in Latin music.

Introduction

The 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards took place on Thursday (April 28) at the BankUnited Center in Miami, Florida.

The annual awards show, which honors the best in Latin music, was hosted by actress Roselyn Sanchez and Mexican singer-songwriter Diego boneta.

Some of the night’s big winners included Marc Anthony, who took home the award for Latin pop album of the year for ‘3.0,’ Romeo Santos, who was named Latin artist of the year, and J Balvin, who won four awards, including hot Latin song of the year for his hit “Ginza.”

The Winners

Drake, Enrique Iglesias and Romeo Santos were the top winners at the 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards, taking home eight awards each. Other winners included Marc Anthony, J. Balvin, Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizarraga and Carlos Vives.

Artist of the Year

The Billboard Latin Music Awards is an annual awards show that honors the most popular artists in Latin music. According to Billboard magazine, the award is “the most prestigious award given to a Latin artist in the United States”.

The award for Artist of the Year was first presented to Mexican singer Luis Miguel in 1994. In 2000, Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan became the first female artist to be awarded the honor. The award has been presented to a female artist every year since then, with the exception of 2006 when it was awarded to Mexican band Mana.

Since its inception, the award has been presented to eighteen different artists.Mexican singers Luis Miguel and Gloria Trevi have each won the award three times, while Panamanian singer Rubén Blades and Colombian singer Shakira have each won it twice. Puerto Rican duo Wisin & Yandel are the only duo or group to have won the award.

The Winner for Song of the Year goes to Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber!

Album of the Year

The nominees for Album of the Year were:

The winner of the Album of the Year was “Formas de Amar” by Reik.

New Artist of the Year

The winner of the 2016 Billboard Latin Music Award for New Artist of the Year is Ozuna!

Ozuna is a Puerto Rican reggaeton and Latin trap singer. His breakout hit “No Quiere Enamorarse” peaked at number one on the US Latin Airplay chart in 2016. He has since released a number of successful singles, including “Dile Que Tu Me Quieres”, “Tu Foto”, and “El Farsante”.

Ozuna has quickly become one of the most popular Latin artists in the world, and we can’t wait to see what he does next!

Tour of the Year

The nominees for the category of Top Latin Tour of the Year reflect the tremendous global appeal of Latin music. These artists have traveled all over the world, thrilling audiences with their live performances. The winner in this category will be announced at the 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Social Artist of the Year

The winner of the Social Artist of the Year award is determined by the total number of social media interactions (shares, likes and comments) on official artist pages across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr during a specified eligibility period.

This year’s winner is Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee.

Latin Rhythm Artist of the Year

Reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee took home the Latin Rhythm Artist of the Year award at the 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

The Puerto Rican star, who has been one of the leading figures in the reggaeton movement for over a decade, beat out fellow nominees J Balvin, Maluma, Farruko and Yandel for the coveted prize.

Daddy Yankee is also up for the Song of the Year award for his global smash hit “Despacito,” which he recorded with Luis Fonsi.

Latin Rhythm Album of the Year

This award goes to the production team credited with the album for the year in the Latin Rhythm field.

Conclusion

The 2016 Billboard Latin Music Awards, hosted by actor and comedian Mario Lopez and broadcast live on Telemundo, honored the biggest names in Latin music on Thursday night (April 28).

Romeo Santos took home a leading nine awards, including artist of the year, airplay song of the year and Latin pop song of the year. Ozuna led the way in the new artist categories, winning four prizes.

In addition to honoring music’s best and brightest, the ceremony also featured electrifying performances from some of Latin music’s hottest stars. Ozuna kicked things off with a sizzling performance of his hit “No Quiere Enamorarse,” before Jennifer Lopez took the stage to perform her new Spanish-language single “Ain’t Your Mama.” Other standouts included Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s show-stopping performance of “Despacito,” De La Ghetto’s heartfelt rendition of “Calentura” and Prince Royce’s super sexy performance of his new single “Back It Up.”
