The challenges facing Boston Folk Music Radio
Boston Folk Music Radio is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, independent, commercial-free radio station broadcasting 24/7 to Greater Boston and streaming worldwide at bostonfolkradio.org. We play music by regional, national, and international folk and Americana artists in a wide variety of styles.
Since our founding in 2013, we have been entirely listener-supported. We receive no government funding and rely solely on the generosity of our listeners to keep the music playing.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the folk music community. With clubs and venues closed down indefinitely, many musicians have lost their primary source of income. The situation is particularly dire for touring artists who have seen all their upcoming gigs cancelled.
As a result of these economic conditions, Boston Folk Music Radio is facing significant financial challenges. We have had to make some tough decisions in order to stay on the air, including reducing our streaming bitrate (saving $200/month), cancelling our subscription to the Folk Alliance International conference (saving $500/year), and reducing staff hours (saving $1,000/month).
We are extremely grateful for the support of our listeners during this difficult time. If you are able, please consider making a donation to help us keep the music playing.
