Folk Music to Look Forward to in 2014
It’s a new year, which means new music to look forward to! Here are some up-and-coming folk artists to keep an eye out for in 2014.
The Revivalists
The Revivalists are a seven-piece band based in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The band consists of Ed Williams (guitar), Zack Feinberg (guitar), George Gekas (bass), Andrew Campanelli (drums), David Shaw (lead vocals), Rob Ingraham (saxophone), and Michael Girardot (trumpet).
Their sound has been described as “a blend of rock ‘n’ roll, funk and New Orleans jazz,” and comparisons have been made to acts such as the Grateful Dead, Paul Simon, Van Morrison, and Allen Toussaint. The Revivalists have toured extensively throughout the United States, including appearances at Lollapalooza, Hangout Music Fest, Austin City Limits Music Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Forecastle Festival and Voodoo Experience.
The Lone Bellow
The Lone Bellow is a Brooklyn-based band that “makes music from the heartland with the spirit of the city.” The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 2013 to critical acclaim, and their follow-up album, Then Came the Morning, is scheduled for release in 2014. The band has been praised for their “tight harmonies and ringing guitars” as well as their “soulful anthems about love and loss.”
The Head and the Heart
American indie folk band The Head and the Heart are due to release their third album, ‘Signs of Light’, in September 2016. The first single from the album, ‘All We Ever Knew’, was released in June 2016 and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The Head and the Heart’s self-titled debut album was released in 2010 and reached number 5 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Their second album, ‘Let’s Be Still’, was released in 2013 and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Folk Albums chart.
Elephant Revival
If you’re a fan of folk music, then you’ll want to keep an eye out for Elephant Revival. This band is quickly gaining popularity, and with good reason. Their music is beautiful and their live performances are truly unforgettable. You can catch them on tour in 2014 – see below for dates.

The Lumineers
The Lumineers are an American folk rock band based in Denver, Colorado. The band members are Wesley Schultz on guitar and lead vocals, Neyla Pekarek on cello and backing vocals, and Jeremiah Fraites on drums. The Lumineers formed in 2005, and the trio met while attending New York University.
The Lumineers self-released their first album, the extended play ETC. in 2011; it comprised three songs they had written while still in college. In 2012 they released their self-titled debut album to critical acclaim and commercial success. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album’s second single, “Ho Hey”, reached number 3 on the Hot 100 chart.
Their follow-up album Cleopatra was released on April 8, 2016.
