“King of the Underdogs”

The heavy metal world was dealt a devastating blow in early 2013 when Metallica bassist Cliff Burton tragically passed away. While the band soldiered on, fans were left wondering if anyone could ever fill Burton’s shoes. Jason Newsted, who had joined the band following Burton’s death, was up to the task.

With Newsted at the helm, Metallica released one of the best heavy metal albums of 2013. Newsted’s contributions are all over the album, from the fist-pumping opener “Fuel” to the driving force behind “King Nothing.” He even gets a chance to show off his vocal chops on “My World.”

Newsted proved that he was more than capable of carrying the weight of Burton’s legacy. He is truly the King of the Underdogs.

“Soldiers”

“Soldiers” is the first single from Newsted’s debut album Heavy Metal Music. The song was released on July 9, 2013, and is a tribute to the military soldiers who have lost their lives in combat.

Metallica

“Through the Never”

“Through the Never” is the lead single from Metallica’s tenth studio album, Hardwired… to Self-Destruct. The song was released as a digital single on August 18, 2016, and was later released to radio on September 26, 2016.

The song was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. It is one of the few tracks on the album that does not feature contributions from Robert Trujillo or Kirk Hammett; instead, it featuresJason Newsted playing bass.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Hetfield stated that the song is about “the never-ending quest for knowledge”. He further elaborated:

The lyrics of “Through the Never” were written by Hetfield andUlrich, while the music was composed by Hetfield, Ulrich and Newsted. The song is four minutes and seventeen seconds long.

The song received positive reviews from music critics. AllMusic’s Greg Prato praised its “crunchy riffs” and “thunderous drumming”.

“Beyond Magnetic”

Beyond Magnetic is the fourth EP by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on December 13, 2011 through Warner Bros. Records. The EP consists of four tracks that were recorded during the Death Magnetic sessions but were not included on the final album. Three of the tracks (“Hate Train”, “Just a Bullet Away”, and “Rebel of Babylon”) had originally been released as part of the band’s live downloadable content for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock in 2010, while “Hell and Back” was previously unreleased. Beyond Magnetic received positive reviews from music critics, who praised its quality and noted its similarity to Death Magnetic.

“Super Collider”

The title track, “Super Collider,” is the first single from Megadeth’s upcoming thirteenth studio album, Super Collider. The song was released on May 28, 2013, as a digital download.

“Super Collider” is a fast-paced thrash metal song with a runtime of just under four minutes. The song begins with a clean guitar intro before the rest of the instruments come in and the vocals begin. The lyrics are mostly repetitive, but they are delivered with conviction by frontman Dave Mustaine. The chorus is catchy and will stick in your head long after the song is over.

The instrumentation on “Super Collider” is top-notch, as one would expect from a band like Megadeth. The guitars are heavy and shredding, the bass is thumping, and the drums are pounding. There is also a great solo in the middle of the song that will get your head nodding along.

Overall, “Super Collider” is a great metal song and a promising start to what promises to be a great album from Megadeth.

It was released on May 15, 2001, and is notable for being the band’s first album following the departure of longtime bassist/vocalist David Ellefson. The album peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard 200, selling 61,000 copies in its first week of release, making it the band’s second-highest debut to that point. The World Needs a Hero received mixed reviews from music critics.

The band’s lyrics often deal with dark subject matter, such as murder, death, terrorism, war, and Satanism.

“Repentless”

The best heavy metal music of 2013 was Slayer’s “Repentless.” The song is a fast-paced, brutal assault on the senses that never lets up. The guitar work is insane, the drums are thunderous, and the vocals are perfectly demonic. This is the perfect song for headbanging and moshing.

“World Painted Blood”

“For All Kings”

The album starts with the sound of a racing heart beat, before breaking into the head-banging opener, “Bury Me Her.” The song is an anthem for those working hard to make their dreams come true, with singer/bassist Jason Newsted demanding, “Don’t bury me alive/I’m not dead yet.” From there, the album only gets better, with each track showcasing Newsted’s outstanding vocal performances and the band’s tight musicianship. “King of the Underdogs” is a particular standout, with its fist-pumping chorus and shredding guitar work.
