Introduction
Heavy metal is the fastest growing music genre. According to a new study, the number of people who identify as metal fans has increased by 33% since 2006.
This is likely due to the popularity of metal subgenres like deathcore and black metal, which have seen a surge in popularity in recent years. But it’s also due to the fact that metal fans are becoming more open to different styles of music.
So if you’re looking for a new genre to get into, heavy metal might be the perfect choice.
The History of Heavy Metal
Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is characterized by heavily distorted guitars, vocals that are often screamed or growled, and drums that are played with fast, aggressive beats. Heavy metal songs often have dark, aggressive lyrics that deal with topics like death, violence, and other dark themes.
Early metal and its origins
The origins of heavy metal can be traced back to the early 1950s, when a new style of music called rock and roll began to emerge. Rock and roll was characterized by its heavy beats and distorted guitars, and it quickly became popular with young people all over the world.
In the 1960s, a new type of rock and roll known as hard rock began to emerge. Hard rock was even heavier and more distorted than earlier styles of rock and roll, and it soon became the dominant form of rock music.
In the 1970s, a new subgenre of hard rock known as heavy metal began to emerge. Heavy metal was even heavier and more distorted than hard rock, and it quickly gained a large following among young people.
Heavy metal has continued to evolve since its inception, and it remains one of the most popular genres of music today.
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) was a musical movement that started in the late 1970s and gained momentum in the early 1980s.Heavy metal had been out of the mainstream for a few years and was mostly associated with older, established bands such as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The NWOBHM came as a breath of fresh air, with a new generation of bands playing a more aggressive, fast-paced brand of metal.
Many of these bands, such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, went on to have hugely successful careers, both in the UK and internationally. The NWOBHM also had a big impact on the US metal scene, with bands like Metallica and Megadeth taking inspiration from their British counterparts.
Today, the NWOBHM is seen as one of the most important movements in heavy metal history.
Thrash metal
Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that emerged in the early 1980s. The genre is characterized by fast tempos, aggressive musicianship, and often lyrical themes of violence and rebellion. Thrash metal songs typically use fast-paced riffs and high-speed solos.
The earliest examples of thrash metal include bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax – all of which formed in 1981. These bands were influenced by earlier heavy metal groups such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, as well as punk rock bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.
In the mid-1980s, thrash metal became increasingly popular, with bands such as Exodus, Testament, and Slayer gaining mainstream attention. By the early 1990s, thrash metal had lost some of its momentum; however, groups such as Pantera and Sepultura continued to record successful albums throughout the decade.
In the 21st century, thrash metal has seen a resurgence in popularity; many newer bands, such as Lamb of God and Trivium, have been influenced by the sound of 1980s thrash.
Death metal
Originating in the late 1980s, death metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that typically employs heavily distorted guitars, played with techniques such as palm muting and tremolo picking, deep growling vocals, aggressive, powerful drumming featuring double kick and blast beat percussion, and raw production. Death metal features a minor key tonality, with many songs based around A♭ and D♭.
Atmospheric death metal is a style that combines death metal with elements of black metal to create a more atmospheric sound. It often uses keyboards to create an atmospheric soundscape. Technical death metal is a subgenre that combines death metal with elements of progressive rock and extreme metal. It is often highly technical, spastic-sounding, and complex in song structure.
Black metal
Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music. Common traits include fast tempos, a shrieking vocal style, heavily distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, raw recording, unconventional song structures, and an emphasis on atmosphere. Artists often appear in corpse paint and adopt pseudonyms.
During the 1980s, several thrash and death metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called first wave included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. A second wave arose in the early 1990s, spearheaded by Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. The early Norwegian black metal scene developed the style of their forebears into a distinct genre. Norwegian-inspired black metal scenes emerged throughout Europe and North America, although some other regions developed their own styles independently. Some prominent Swedish bands spawned during this second wave include Marduk, Dissection and Hypocrisy.
Initially a synonym for “Satanic metal”, black metal has often sparked controversy due to the actions or ideologies of some of its practitioners. Many artists express extreme anti-Christian or misanthropic views; whether genuine or for shock value is often unclear. Many members of the genre have been convicted of murder or other violent crimes; a few others have been implicated but not convicted such as Varg Vikernes in the 1992 Burning Churches Affair in Norway. There is also a small neo-Nazi movement within black metal. Black metal’s cult status was enhanced by the late 1990s media hype surrounding Norway’s “black metal sinners”. In the 2000s there was increased media attention on black metal due to high-profile releases such as Poisonwood by Watain and In the Nightside Eclipse by Emperor; both albums were ranked in Decibel’s list of all-time top 100 extreme albums.[7]
