Classic Rock and Roll – The Best Podcasts for Music Lovers

Rock and Roll music has been around for decades and it is still as popular as ever. There are many great rock and roll bands out there that are still making great music. If you are a fan of rock and roll, then you should check out these great podcasts.

What is Classic Rock and Roll?

Rock and roll is a genre of popular music that evolved in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It originated from musical styles such as gospel, jump blues, jazz, boogie woogie, rhythm and blues, and country music. While rock and roll’s formative elements can be heard in blues records from the 1920s and in country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until 1954.

The term “rock and roll” now has at least two different meanings, both in common usage. The American Heritage Dictionary and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary both define rock and roll as synonymous with rock music. Encyclopedia Britannica, on the other hand, regards it as the music that originated in the mid-1950s and later developed “into the more encompassing international style known as rock music”; Britannica additionally states that “typical rock ‘n’ roll…fuses elements of rhythm and blues, gospel, country township jive”.

In 1951, Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed began playing this music style while popularizing the phrase “rocking and rolling” to describe it. The origins of rock and roll have been fiercely debated by historians of music. One approach emphasizes the link between rock and roll and African-American commercial music of the late 19th century through to 1950s such as jazz, big band swing (particularly Lindy Hop), Rhythm & Blues (R&B), Jump Blues, Boogie Woogie; while another approach links it to 1950’s white teenage culture through Bill Haley’s Comets ROCK Around The Clock (1955) which became a number 1 hit worldwide in early 1956. There is general agreement that it arose as a younger generation’s reaction to the rigidity of 1950s mainstream pop, but beyond that there are multiple theories looking at ethnicity (Anglo-American versus Afro-American), geography (North America versus Southern United States versus United Kingdom versus elsewhere), economics (working class culture versus affluence), social factors (teenagers rebelling against conformist society), politics (“payola” scandal versus government repression) or subculture( Beatniks versus Greasers).

Jazz is a genre of music that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as ” America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime, as well as European military band music.Although the foundation of jazz is deeply rooted within the black experience of the United States, different cultures have contributed their own experience and styles to the art form as well.
