It’s been a great year for metal music, and November was no exception. November saw the release of some great metal albums, including the highly anticipated new album from Lamb of God. Here are the best metal albums of November 2015.
Draconian – Sovran
Draconian’s eighth album Sovran is a concept album about the rise and fall of civilizations, with a particular focus on the fall of the Roman Empire. The music is dark and atmospheric, with gothic influences and occasional moments of beauty. singer Heike Langhans has a gorgeous voice that really shines on the slower, more emotive tracks. This is a great album for fans of gothic metal or anyone who enjoys dark and atmospheric music.
Tribulation – The Children of the Night
Tribulation’s “The Children of the Night” is one of the best albums of November 2015.
This Swedish metal band’s third album is a perfect blend of death metal, black metal, and gothic rock. It’s dark, it’s atmospheric, and it’s absolutely shredding. From the opening track, “Strange Gateways Beckon,” to the closing track, “Red Dragon,” this album is an unrelenting onslaught of awesome.
If you’re a fan of any of the aforementioned genres, or if you’re just looking for a damn good metal album, look no further than Tribulation’s “The Children of the Night.”
Mgla – Exercises in Futility
Mgla is a Polish black metal band formed in 2002 in Kraków. The band’s name is derived from the Norwegian word for mist or fog. They have released three studio albums, with their most recent, Exercises in Futility, released on September 25, 2015.
Exercises in Futility is the third full-length studio album by Mgla. It was recorded and mixed between February and May 2015 at No Solace studio in Kraków and mastered at Satanic Audio by Yoann “Summer” Louvet. It was released on September 25, 2015, by Northern Heritage and Black Plague Records on CD, vinyl, and digital formats. On October 2, 2015, Exercises in Futility was made available for streaming in its entirety through Noisey.On the same day, a music video was released for the track “Exercises in Futility VI”.
The album received critical acclaim upon its release. Sean Tggart of Exclaim! gave the album a perfect score of 10 out of 10 and stated: “While it may not be an easy listen at first blush — or even second or third — once you let yourself sink into its cavernous depths, you’ll find that Exercises In Futility is nothing short of a masterpiece.” Matthew Remis of PopMatters also gave the album a perfect score of 10 out of 10 and wrote: “Mgła have delivered an instant classic with Exercises in Futility.” Adam McNab of The Skinny gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and commented: “On their third full-length release, Mgła continue to blur genre boundaries while remaining unequivocally heavy.”
In December 2015, Metal Hammer ranked Exercises in Futility as the fourth best metal album of 2015.

Draconian – “As I Wake”
“As I Wake” is the first song off of Draconian’s seventh studio album Sovran. The album was released on October 2, 2015, and “As I Wake” was released as a single on August 21, 2015. Sovran is a concept album about loss, grief, and hope, and “As I Wake” is the perfect opener for the relentless emotional journey that is to come.
The song starts off with a simple guitar line that is soon met with Sarah Hallberg’s gorgeous vocals. The lyrics are drenched in despair and longing, but there is still a sense of hope buried deep within them. The song builds in intensity as it goes on, eventually culminating in a huge chorus that will stick with you long after the song is over.
If you’re a fan of heavy metal music that isn’t afraid to deal with dark subject matter, then you need to check out “As I Wake” by Draconian.
Tribulation – “In the Dreams of the Dead”
On their fourth album, and first for Century Media, Swedish metallers TRIBULATION offer up another record laden with dual guitar majesty, gothic romance, and horror-inspired atmospheres. “In The Dreams Of The Dead” proves once again that the modern metal landscape is in desperate need of true songwriters, as the group craft an11-track Demon/Wizardry-styledextravaganza that is as intoxicatingly catchy as it is heavy.
Mgla – “Exercises in Futility II”
Mgla is a Polish black metal band, formed in 2000 in Kraków. The group’s music is characterized by a raw and minimalistic sound, heavily influenced by early Norwegian black metal bands such as Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum.
“Exercises in Futility II” is the second track on Mgla’s 2015 album Exercises in Futility. The song was released as a single on October 30, 2015.
The song received positive reviews from music critics. AllMusic’s Ned Raggett praised the song for its “atmospheric power and drive”, while Pitchfork’s Grayson Haver Currin described it as “stunningly gorgeous”.
