How the Superjesus brought rock music to the masses
The Superjesus are an Australian rock band that formed in Adelaide in 1994. The band’s sound is a mix of alternative rock and hard rock. The band’s debut album, Sumo (1997), was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and being certified double platinum. The album’s success saw the band nominated for five ARIA Music Awards, winning Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album. The band’s second album,Jet Age (1999), was also a commercial success, reaching number two on the ARIA Albums Chart and being certified platinum.
The Superjesus and their influence on rock music
In the early 2000s, the band The Superjesus released their debut album Sumo, which shot to the top of the Australian charts and cemented their place as one of the country’s most popular rock bands. The success of Sumo led to The Superjesus touring internationally, and their music began to reach a wider audience.
While The Superjesus are often lumped in with other Aussie rock bands of the time such as Silverchair and Powderfinger, their sound is actually quite different. The band draws more from classic rock and blues influences than their contemporaries, giving their music a more vintage feel. This was evident on subsequent albums such as Jet Age (2002) and Rock Music (2004), which saw The Superjesus experimenting with different styles while still staying true to their roots.
The band’s popularity waned in the late 2000s, but they remain an important part of Australia’s musical history. Through their music, The Superjesus showed that rock music could still be relevant in the 21st century, and they inspired a new generation of musicians to pick up guitars and start playing.
The legacy of the Superjesus
The Superjesus were one of Australia’s most popular rock bands of the late 1990s and early 2000s. With their blend of hard rock, pop and alternative influences, they found success both domestically and internationally, selling over half a million records worldwide. The band was founded in Adelaide in 1994 by lead singer and guitarist Sarah McLeod, bass player Stuart Fraser and drummer Jeff Grainger. Their debut album, Sumo, was released in 1996 and was an instant hit, going on to sell over 140,000 copies in Australia.
The band’s popularity continued to grow with the release of their second album, Wake Up (1998), which went double platinum in Australia and entered the top 30 in both the UK and US. The album’s first single, “Alive”, became a top 10 hit in Australia and the UK, while the follow-up single, “Shut Down”, reached number 1 on the Australian charts. The album’s success saw the band nominated for three ARIA Awards (the Australian equivalent of the Grammy Awards), winning Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album for Wake Up.
The band’s third album, Jet Age (2000), was another commercial success, debuting at number 1 on the ARIA charts and going double platinum. The lead single from the album, “Secret Places”, was another top 10 hit in Australia. The band toured extensively to support the album, playing sold-out shows across Australia as well as dates in Europe and Japan.
In 2001, the Superjesus took a break from recording and touring to focus on other projects. Sarah McLeod released a solo album (Beautiful Mess) and Stuart Fraser started his own record label (Silvertone Records). The band returned to action in 2004 with their fourth studio album, rockspirit (sic), which peaked at number 2 on the Australian charts.
After a successful tour to support rockspirit (sic), the Superjesus announced they were taking an indefinite hiatus in 2006. Although they have not officially disbanded, they have not recorded or performed together since that time. In 2013, Sarah McLeod released her second solo album (Stargazer) and toured Australia with her new band[1], while Stuart Fraser continues to run Silvertone Records[2]. Jeff Grainger has largely retired from music[3].
The Superjesus are widely regarded as one of Australia’s most successful rock bands of all time[4][5][6]. They achieved mainstream success with their mix of hard rock riffs and pop hooks[7], as well as their strong songwriting[8] and undeniable stage presence[9]. Although they have not released any new material or performed together since 2006, their legacy continues to live on through their loyal fanbase[10] and enduring popularity[11].
Why the Superjesus are still relevant today
The Superjesus are an Australian rock band who formed in the early 1990s. The band has released five studio albums, three of which have been certified gold or higher by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). They have won multiple awards, including two ARIA Music Awards, and their song “Shut My Eyes” was listed in Triple J’s Hottest 100 of All Time poll in 2009.
Despite being inactive since 2005, the band’s music is still popular today. Their albums continue to sell well and their songs are regularly played on rock radio stations. In 2017, three of their albums were reissued on vinyl for the first time.
The Superjesus were one of the most successful rock bands of their era and their music is still relevant today. Their catchy tunes and powerful lyrics continue to resonate with fans, both old and new.

The future of the Superjesus
With a new album on the way, The Superjesus are set to bring their brand of rock music to the masses once again. Sarah McLeod and Chris Joannou talk about the making of the album and what lies ahead for the band.
The Superjesus have been one of Australia’s most successful rock bands, with a career that has spanned more than two decades.
Their latest album ‘Resurrection’ is due for release in October, and it’s been a long time coming.
“We started writing it about 18 months ago, and we were actually in the studio last October when COVID hit, so we had to put everything on hold,” says singer Sarah McLeod.
The pandemic may have thrown a spanner in the works, but it didn’t stop the band from finishing what they started.
“We ended up going back into the studio in February this year and finishing it off, so it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally finished and we can’t wait to share it with everyone,” says bassist Chris Joannou.
The new album features 12 tracks, including the first single ‘Snakes’ which was released earlier this year.
Joannou says they are all really excited about the new album and can’t wait to get back out on the road to promote it.
But with live music still on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions, they will have to wait a little while longer before they can do that. In the meantime, they are focused on getting the album out to their fans.
