But I guess that’s just how life goes sometimes.
Anyways, what I wanted to write about today is how my exposure to different styles of jazz music has changed my opinion on the genre as a whole. You see, when I was first starting out, I was dead set on only playing bebop. That was the “cool” style of jazz at the time, and all the other stuff just sounded like noise to me. But as I started gigging more and meeting other musicians, I began to realize that there’s so much more to jazz than just bebop.
I remember one gig in particular that really opened my eyes. It was at this dive bar in Brooklyn and the band consisted of a guitar player, a saxophonist, a bassist, and myself on drums. The whole set was improvised and it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had playing music. Since then, I’ve been trying to explore different styles of jazz and find my own sound within the genre.
So if you’re like me and you’re tired of playing the same old tired standards every night, get out there and explore what else jazz has to offer. You might just find that there’s a whole world of music out there waiting for you to discover it.
