The Jackson 5

The Jackson 5 (stylized as the Jackson 5ive), later known as the Jacksons, is an American pop band founded in 1964 by brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine, with younger brothers Marlon and Michael joining soon after. The quintet’s first album, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5 (1969), was released on the Motown label. It was followed by four more successful studio albums on Motown’s industrial output machine—ABC, Third Album, Get It Together and Moving Violation—and another album of charted singles, Greatest Hits. The group left Motown in 1975 and won their biggest success with the albums Destiny (1978), Triumph (1980) and Victory (1984). Through a succession of managers which included father Joseph Jackson, the brothers toured the world from February 1969 through to December 1984 playing 632 concerts in front of audiences totalling more than 20 million people across North America alone.

The band stopped touring in 1984 following Michael Jackson’s solo success and Jermaine Jackson’s departure from the group. Although Triumph was their last album produced by any of the original group members, it included three new tracks featuring Jermaine Jackson—including the top 10 hit “Heartbreak Hotel”. In 2001, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as “artists” by a panel that included musician-producer Quincy Jones and record label executive Tom Anderson. They have sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide to date.

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American singer, songwriter and dancer. dubbed the “King of Pop”, he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century and one of the greatest entertainers in history. He was also known for his unorthodox lifestyle, residing in a white glove mansion and sleeping in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Jackson’s contributions to music, dance and fashion along with his publicized personal life made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades.

The eighth child of the Jackson family, Michael made his professional debut in 1964 with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito and Jermaine as a member of the Jackson 5. He began his solo career in 1971 while at Motown Records. In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. His music videos, including those for “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and “Thriller” from his 1982 album Thriller, are credited with breaking racial barriers and transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos helped bring the television channel MTV to fame. Critics have also noted aspects of religious symbolism in his videos such as use of cross-shaped hand gestures at significant points.”

The family was originally from Utah but moved to California to pursue their musical career. The family was discovered by a music producer and signed a record deal. The Original Band
