History of the Event
The history of the event is interesting. The first performance was in Kansas City, MO. The actor who played the lead, Carlotta, was a local girl. She was only in the show for two weeks and then the show moved to New York.
When was the first performance?
The first performance of The Phantom of the Opera was on Broadway at the New York Theater on January 26, 1988. The musical then transferred to the Majestic Theatre on Broadway, where it ran for 7 years before closing on May 28, 1995. The musical reopened on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre on January 9, 2006, and is still running there today.
What is the story behind the event?
In 1875, the Music Hall in Kansas City was built as part of a project to bring recognized cultural organizations to the city. The building originally served as a venue for plays and other live entertainment. In 1909, the name of the theater was changed to the “Pantomime Theater” and it began to specialize in light opera and operettas. The name was changed again in 1913 to the “Pantomime Opera House” and it became known for its summer stock theater productions.
In 1966, the name was once again changed, this time to the “Music Hall”, and it underwent a major renovation. The Music Hall has been home to the Lyric Opera of Kansas City since 1972 and is now also home to the Kansas City Ballet and Missouri Symphony Orchestra. The theater has a capacity of 2,400 people and features an orchestra pit that can accommodate up to 100 musicians.
What is the meaning of the event?
The event is a benefit concert to raise money for the Music Hall in KC MO. The event will feature performances by local and national performers, as well as a variety of interactive exhibits.
Event Itself
The Music Hall in Kansas City was filled with eager fans on the night of October 31, 2016. Many of them had seen the play before, but others were first timers like myself. I had butterflies in my stomach as the lights dimmed and the overture began.
What can attendees expect?
Pantom of the Opera is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The music was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the lyrics were written by Charles Hart, with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. The musical debuted in London’s West End in 1986, and has since been performed around the world. It has been translated into several languages and has become one of the most popular musicals of all time.
The story tells of a young opera singer, Christine Daaé, who is lured to the Paris Opera House by a phantom, an invisible being who lives in the catacombs beneath the theatre. The phantom falls in love with Christine and becomes obsessed with making her a star. However, when Christine begins to fall for another man, Raoul de Chagny, the phantom’s jealousy leads him to kidnap her and take her to his secret lair.
Pantom of the Opera is a visually stunning show, with lavish sets and costumes. The music is very grand and sweeping, and includes some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous tunes, such as “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Music of the Night” and “All I Ask of You”.
