Where Was Grunge Music Born?

Grunge music originated in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The term “grunge” was first used to describe the Seattle music scene in a article published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 1991.

Seattle

Grunge music was born in Seattle in the 1980s. It was a reaction to the mainstream music of the time, which was often polished and overproduced. Grunge was a rawer, more emotional type of music that was influenced by punk and metal. Seattle was the perfect place for grunge to start because it was an isolated city with a strong DIY ethic.

The music scene

The music scene

Grunge music was born in Aberdeen, Washington, a small fishing town about 100 miles south of Seattle. The music scene in Aberdeen was very different from the Seattle scene that would later come to be associated with grunge. In Aberdeen, there were only a few clubs and most bands played cover songs. There was no market for original music.

The first grunge band from Aberdeen was Green River. Green River was formed in 1984 and consisted of Mark Arm (vocals), Steve Turner (guitar), Jeff Ament (bass), and Alex Vincent (drums). The band’s sound was influenced by punk rock and heavy metal, and their lyrics were often about dark topics such as drug addiction and suicide.

In 1987, Green River released their first album, Come On Down. The album was not a commercial success, but it did garner some attention from the Seattle music scene. One of the people who took notice of Green River was Sub Pop Records founder Bruce Pavitt. Pavitt saw potential in the band and signed them to a record deal.

In 1988, Green River released their second album, Dry As a Bone. The album received positive reviews from critics, but again failed to find a mainstream audience. Undeterred, Pavitt continued to support the band and signed them to another record deal with Sub Pop.

In 1989, Green River released their third album, Rehab Doll. The album’s lead single, “Alive”, became a surprise hit and helped propel the album to commercial success. “Alive” was later covered by Pearl Jam and became one of their signature songs. Rehab Doll would ultimately be certified Gold by the RIAA, making it the first grunge album to achieve that distinction.

Green River would go on to release one more album before breaking up in 1998. While they were not the most successful grunge band commercially, they were very influential to the genre and helped pave the way for other Aberdeen bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden who would achieve huge success in the early 1990s.

The fashion

Grunge fashion was created by grunge musicians and fans in an individiualistic and anti-consumerist way. It was based on thrift store clothes and independent labels, and it became fashionable in mainstream culture in the early 1990s.

The style consisted of worn-out jeans, flannel shirts, and often ripped sweaters or cardigans. Doc Martens boots or Converse sneakers were also commonly worn. Layering was important, as was leaving some pieces undone (for example, an open flannel shirt over a t-shirt).

The hair was often unkempt and dirty-looking, with greasy bangs hanging in the face. For women, this sometimes meant wearing baby doll dresses over leggings. Makeup was minimal or nonexistent.
