A look back at the best grunge music of 1998. From Nirvana to Pearl Jam to Stone Temple Pilots, these are the bands that defined a generation.

Introduction

In the early 1990s, a new type of rock music emerged from the American Pacific Northwest that came to be known as “grunge.” Grunge music was characterized by its dark, often depressing lyrics, its heavy guitar sound, and its overall “slacker” attitude. The grunge movement was initially led by the bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but other grunge bands such as Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots also found success in the early 1990s.

By the mid-1990s, grunge music had become one of the most popular types of rock music in the world. However, the sudden success of grunge also had a downside; many of the most popular grunge bands (Nirvana in particular) became plagued by drug addiction and other personal problems, which eventually led to their breakup or demise. Nevertheless, the legacy of grunge music remains strong; many of the bands that helped to define this musical genre are still active today, and their influence can still be heard in much of modern rock music.
