When he was seven years old, his father gave him a guitar and he began taking lessons from a local preacher. In high school, Spencer joined the school choir and played football. He graduated from Chattanooga’s Howard High School in 1981.

After high school, Spencer briefly attended Tennessee State University before transferring to Middle Tennessee State University, where he studied music education. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education.

Death
