The Canton Spirituals
Formed in Canton, Mississippi in the early 1940s, The Canton Spirituals are one of the most influential and important gospel music trios of all time. The group was originally made up of founder Edward Pierce, Paul Beasley, and Leroy are now considered pioneers of the genre and their work has influenced everyone from Andraé Crouch to James Cleveland.
History
The Canton Spirituals are an American gospel music group from Canton, Mississippi. The group was founded in 1943 and originally consisted of Robert Caldwell, Lucius Burcham, Richard Ward, Maurice Grey, and Theo Thompson. The group is best known for their hit songs “Swing Down, Sweet Chariot” and “I’m So Glad I Got Good News”.
The Canton Spirituals began their career singing at local churches and schools in the Mississippi Delta region. In the early 1950s, they caught the attention of record producer Nashbu =rry Wilburn, who signed them to his Nashboro Records label. Wilburn produced the group’s first recordings, which were released on the Nashboro label.
The Canton Spirituals enjoyed a long and successful career, recording more than 20 albums and becoming one of the most popular gospel music groups of their era. They were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

The group was formed in 1953 by brothers Levi and Walter Williams, who were joined by their cousin, Henry Green. The Williams Brothers have been credited with helping to shape the sound of contemporary gospel music, and their work has influenced numerous artists over the years.

They are best known for their work in the 1960s and 1970s with Bobby Womack and The Valentinos, as well as their own hit records “Stormy Weather” and “Can’t Cry Hard Enough”. The group has been nominated for four Grammy Awards and has won two.
The Williams Brothers began their career singing in Detroit-area churches. In 1963, they signed with SAR Records and released their debut album, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. The album featured a cover of the traditional folk song “Midnight Special”, which became a hit single. The group followed up with the albums Saving Grace (1964) and The New Born Soul (1965).
In 1966, the Williams Brothers joined forces with Bobby Womack and The Valentinos to form the supergroup BWB. The group recorded the album Beware of BWB, which was released in 1967.
The Williams Brothers left SAR Records in 1968 and signed with Motown Records. Their first album for Motown, Can’t Cry Hard Enough, was released in 1969. The album’s title track became a hit single, reaching #1 on the Billboard R&B chart.
