Origins

Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Cheering also occurred. The first published use of the term “gospel song” probably appeared in 1874 when Philip Bliss released a songbook entitled Gospel Songs. A compilation of English Protestant hymns compiled by editor Morris Widansek was published in Philadelphia in 1876 under the title Garland of New England Gospel Songs and Hymns; several similar books followed including The California Harmony (1876), The Massachusetts Harmony (1878), The Maryland Harmony (1881), Music for All Occasions edited by Chicago publisher Carl Hoffner (1883),and Philip Bliss’s influential Gospel Songs No. 2 (New York 1885).

The term “gospel song” found itself used more frequently after the publication of Fanny Crosby’s hymnal Bright Jewels for Dark Days in 1869. At about the same time, African American spirituals began to be written down, particularly by Eubie Blake and Harry T. Burleigh, two New York City-based composers who collected folk songs from southern blacks during visits to that region about 1900-1915.. By the early 20th century now with mass media like jukeboxes, radio broadcasting and movies, gospel music became increasingly popular among mainstream white popular culture leading to the rise of such artists as Jim Reeves whose single “Peace In The Valley” topped country charts in 1957..

Styles

There are many different styles of gospel music. Some of the most popular and well-known styles include:

Traditional Gospel: This style of music is characterized by its use of choir vocals, accompanied by soloists and a full band or orchestra. Traditional gospel music is often seen as being more “old-fashioned” or “traditional” than other styles of gospel music.

Contemporary Gospel: As the name suggests, contemporary gospel music is a more modern take on the genre. It often features elements of pop, rock, and hip-hop, and is typically performed by solo artists or small groups.

Urban Gospel: Urban gospel music is similar to contemporary gospel, but with a heavier focus on R&B and hip-hop influences. This style of music is often seen as being more “urban” or “street” than other types of gospel music.

Southern Gospel: Southern gospel music is characterized by its use of country and bluegrass influences. This style of music is often seen as being more “traditional” or “old-fashioned” than other types of gospel music.
