What are gospel songs?
Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Cheering also occurred. Along with blues and jazz, gospel music regained popularity in the 1960s.

Much meaning was contained in gospel texts due to the emphasis placed on scripture during the Reformation. During this time, hymns and sacred songs were compiled into hymnals.
The first hymnal, A Collection of Spiritual Songs for the use of the People called Methodists was published in 1780 by John Wesley; it contained “Joy to the World”, “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing”, “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today” and “Amazing Grace”. Wesley’s practice was to attract people from all walks of life to come together and sing praises to God with “purer affections”. This practice was continued by his brother Charles Wesley who wrote around 6500 hymns. Many Sunday schools also sang these songs including children’s classes known as lambs (a term used until around 1900).
In America, gospel first became popular through live performances by Mahalia Jackson beginning in 1942. Her recordings helped gain national exposure for gospel music, causing more blacks to buy phonographs so they could listen to her sing at home. As previously stated, gospel music was originally created for people who were already Christians; however, Mahalia Jackson’s performances helped make it popular among those who were not yet Christians or familiar with Christian beliefs. This new popularity caused more blacks to join churches where they could hear this type of music; soon after that, more whites began attending these churches as well. This rise in popularity eventually led to Gospel becoming mainstream within American pop radio by the late 1960s; some radio stations would have entire days devoted to playing Gospel records supplied by record companies
