The musical premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City on August 8, 2012, and played through September 2. It was directed by Almond, with choreography by Chase Brock.

The cast included Shannon Mullen as Mikey, Abby Mueller as Susannah, Jed Resnick as Will, Michael Arden as Evan, Jason Hite as Duncan, and Barrett Wilbert Weed as Tish.

Set in the early 1990s, Girlfriend is about Mikey Walsh, a high school senior who falls in love with his best friend Susie Myrtle. Susie is already in a relationship with Will Dennis, but she soon realizes that she has feelings for Mikey as well. The three friends navigate their way through the ups and downs of young love while trying to figure out who they are and what they want out of life.
