At the same time, classic rock bands such as Aerosmith, Kiss, Queen, and AC/DC continued to find success. In the 1980s, hair metal bands dominated rock music with their bombastic sounds and flashy images. Bands like Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Def Leppard epitomized this musical style.

In the 1990s and 2000s (decade), alternative rock became popular with groups such as Nirvana leading the way. Other subgenres of rock that emerged in this period include grunge (a fusion of punk and metal), indie rock, Britpop (a 1990s offshoot of alternative), nu metal (a combination of alternativerockand heavy metal), rap metal (a fusion of rapand heavy metal), post-grunge(a 1990strend after grunge), emo(an offshoot of hardcore punk that emphasizes emotionspurportedly more authentic than feelingsexpressed in mainstream pop music) , Gothic Rock(influencedby gothic fictionand fashion) , Christian Rock(rockwith positive Christian lyrics) , Stoner Rock(slow-to-mid tempo lyrics about marijuana use) , Math Rock(characterizedby complex time signatures).

I enjoy soul music because it is usually very smooth and calming. I also like how there is often a lot of emotion in soul songs. For example, one of my favorite soul songs is “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke. This song is about hoping for a better future despite the struggles of the present.
