Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by regular beats on off-beats, often referred to as the skank. Reggae is normally slower than ska but faster than rocksteady. The tempo tends to vary between 60 and 70 beats per minute. The bass guitar often plays the dominant role in reggae, playing a percussive, low-pitched, repetitive line beneath figure lines or lead vocal melodies. Dub techniques developed alongside reggae music, providing additional “versions” (remixes) of tracks with altered mixes featuring different instrumentation or emphasis during selected parts of songs. Other instruments include drums, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass guitar, and keyboards.
Horns are not always used; when they are, they tend to be played in muted fashion or incorporated into extendedfigure lines or other melodic embellishments. Reggae incorporates elements of mento (a distinctly Jamaican folk form that preceded modern day ska), calypso (another folk form), African music, as well as Amerindian and British musical traditions

His full name was Robert Nesta Marley, and he later changed his middle name to “Nesta” to signify his African roots. One of eight children born to Cedella Booker, a black teenager from Kingston, and Norval Sinclair Marley, a much older white Jamaican of English descent who was then sixty-two years old and working as an official for the Jamaican government, Bob Marley grew up in the rural village of Nine Mile before moving with his mother to Kingston when he was fourteen years old.
In Kingston, Marley found work as an apprentice welder and also began writing songs. He eventually left welding to pursue music full time, performing with various groups including the Wailers and Bob Marley & The Wailers before striking out on his own. His unique blend of reggae, ska, and rocksteady quickly made him a star in Jamaica, and he soon began attracting attention from international record labels. In 1972, he signed with Island Records and released his debut album, Catch a Fire.

His song “Buffalo Soldier” addressed the prejudice faced by black soldiers in the American military; “Get Up Stand Up” was a call to action against oppression; and “One Love” advocated peace and unity among all people. In 1980, he released what would become his most famous song, “Redemption Song.” Inspired by a visit to Ethiopia, the track is widely seen as an anthem for oppressed people everywhere.
Bob Marley died of cancer on May 11, 1981, at the age of thirty-six. He was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 and inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. His voice and message continue to inspire people around the world.
