Lenny Bruce

Lenny Bruce was born Leonard Alfred Schneider in Mineola, New York, the son of Sally Marr, a dancer and comedian, and Myron Schneider, a bus driver. Lenny took his mother’s maiden name as his stage name. He grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and attended Edward R. Murrow High School. His parents divorced when he was five years old, and Lenny lived with various relatives over the next decade. His British-born father had left the family when Lenny was four; upon his return to the U.S., he tried unsuccessfully to reunite with his wife and son.

Lenny Bruce began performing as a stand-up comedian in 1942 while still in high school. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduating, but his service was cut short when he contracted an illness (likely meningitis) that landed him in a naval hospital for nine months. When he recovered, he resumed his stand-up career, working first in clubs on the Borscht Belt circuit of Jewish resorts in upstate New York and then in Greenwich Village
