Alto Saxophone

The alto saxophone is a member of the saxophone family of woodwind instruments invented by Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in the 1840s, and patented in 1846. The alto sax is considered a transposing instrument, because it is usually notated one octave higher than it sounds. It is the most common saxophone and is used in classical, jazz, and pop music. The alto saxophone originated in Belgium in the mid-19th century as a smaller, lighter-weight alternative to the tenor and baritone saxophones that were then in use.

The earliest extant examples of the alto saxophone date to 1850, when Sax himself began producing them commercially. The first known solo concert performance on the instrument was given by Belgian virtuoso Wenzel Struber at a concert in Brussels on December 3, 1850. In orchestral usage, its capacity to blend with strings has made it particularly useful as an accompaniment instrument for both military bands and orchestras during the Romantic music era from 1830–1900.
