American Gospel Music

There are many different styles of gospel music, but two of the most popular are black gospel and white gospel. Black gospel is characterized by its African-American roots, while white gospel is characterized by its European-American roots. Both styles of gospel music have their own unique sounds and styles, but they also have a lot in common. Let’s take a closer look at these two styles of gospel music.

What is American Gospel Music?

American Gospel music is a genre of music that is characterized by its Christian lyrics and message, as well as its sound, which is a mixture of different genres of music, such as blues, country, jazz, and rock.

This type of music started to gain popularity in the early 20th century, and it has continued to grow in popularity ever since. American Gospel music has also been a major influence on other genres of music, such as rock and roll, soul, and R&B.

The History of American Gospel Music

American gospel music is a genre of Christian music developed in the United States. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.

Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Gospellers used tambourines, drums, and cymbals for percussion. By the 18th century, inventions such as the piano and harmonium began to replace some instruments. Black gospel developed in the late 19th century from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and Negro spirituals sung by African Americans attempting to escape slavery.

The original gospel songs were written and composed by authors such as George Frederick Root, Philip Bliss, Charles H. Gabriel, William Howard Doane, and Fanny Crosby—among others—using different poetic meter structures common to folk hymns (“Amazing Grace” is an exception). In addition to cords or verses common to selected Psalms (e.g., “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”), many gospel compositions included choruses (refrains), which occasionally were derived from popular or semi-popular sources (“My Country,’Tis of Thee,” “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”). Anexceptional example is “I’ll Fly Away,” which was written originally as a folklore tune by Albert E. Brumley in 1929 that was subsequently adapted into a hymn tune by J.R Tolbert in 1939 which has been widely used since then by both black Christians (for whom it has often been sung as a solo)and white Christians alike (“Amazing Grace” is another such well-known melody that has traverse both groups). In 1952 Aaron Neville made history when his recording of “I Believe” became the first recorded song written by a black composer (Jerome Kern)to become a No 1 pop hit: it remained at that position for two weeks.

Today American gospel music has cross-pollinated with other genres including blues (“The Soul Stirrers featuring Sam Cooke”), soul (” Mahalia Jackson”), jazz(“Wynton Marsalis”), rock & roll(“Sisters Rosetta Tharpe”)and hip hop(“Mary Mary”). It remains one of America’s most vibrant musical forms.

The Different Types of American Gospel Music

When you think of gospel music, the first thing that might come to mind is the traditional black church choirs belting out soulful spirituals. But gospel music has many different forms, all of which share a common purpose: to praise God and give hope to the listener. Here are some of the most popular types of gospel music:

Traditional Gospel: This is the type of gospel music that most people think of when they hear the term “gospel music.” It is characterized by its use of biblical lyrics, harmonies, and instrumentation, and is often associated with the black church.

Contemporary Gospel: As its name suggests, contemporary gospel is a more modern take on traditional gospel music. It often includes elements of other genres, such as R&B, pop, and hip-hop.

Urban Gospel: Another form of contemporary gospel, urban gospel is similar to contemporary gospel but with an emphasis on performing for urban audiences. It often includes rap and other elements from hip-hop culture.
