Introduction

The American Latin Music Awards (ALMA) were created in 1995 by then-president of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, Gabriel Abaroa, to recognize the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music in the United States. The award show is produced by the Latin Recording Academy, which is a part of The Recording Academy (the organization that also produces the Grammy Awards).

The ALMA Awards are given out in several categories, including Pop Album of the Year, Rock Album of the Year, Urban Album of the Year, Regional Mexican Album of the Year, Tropical Album of the Year, and more. The award show also hands out honors for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Producer of the Year. In addition to recognizing music artists, the ALMA Awards also give out awards for TV shows, movies, and other forms of entertainment that have had a significant impact on Latin American culture.

The 2021 ALMA Awards will be held on Thursday, April 22nd at 8pm ET/PT on Univision.

What are the American Latin Music Awards?

The American Latin Music Awards are awards that recognize excellence in the field of Latin American music. These awards are given out annually by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (LARAS). The American Latin Music Awards were first held in 1985, and they are currently the only awards show that exclusively honors Latin American music.

The American Latin Music Awards are open to any recording artist who has released a album or single in the past year. Any album or single that was released between January 1st and December 31st of the previous year is eligible for an award. There is no limit on how many albums or singles an artist can submit for consideration.

The American Latin Music Awards are given out in a variety of categories, including Best Album, Best Song, and Best Artist. There is also a special award called the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is given to an artist who has made significant contributions to the Latin music industry.

History of the American Latin Music Awards

The American Latin Music Awards were established in 2001 by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Latin artists in the United States. The awards are given in a variety of categories, including music, television, and film.

The first American Latin Music Awards were held on October 2, 2002, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by actor/director Edward James Olmos and broadcast live on the Univision network. More than 40 awards were presented that night, including Artist of the Year, which went to Shakira.

In 2003, the Awards show expanded to include a second night of awards and performances. This format continued until 2009, when the show was again condensed to one night. In 2010, the show returned to being a two-night event, with the first night devoted to awards presentations and the second night featuring musical performances.

Since its inception, the American Latin Music Awards have become one of the most prestigious award shows in the Latin music industry. They provide a platform for both established and up-and-coming artists to showcase their talents to a wide audience.
