What is grunge?

Grunge is a rock music genre and subculture that emerged during the mid-1980s in the Pacific Northwest U.S. state of Washington, particularly in Seattle. The style is characterized by heavy guitars, angst-filled lyrics and a “dirty” sound. grunge fashion, which consisted of flannel shirts, ripped jeans, and combat boots, became popular among young people in the 1990s.

Origins

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Grunge music is characterized by heavy guitar riffs, angular melodies, and often bleak lyrics reflecting the frustrations and anxieties of youth.

The genre was brought to mainstream attention by Nirvana’s breakthrough album Nevermind (1991), which reached number one on the Billboard charts and made grunge household name. Other successful grunge bands of the 1990s included Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.

Grunge fashion also became a major force in the 1990s, characterized by its anti-fashion aesthetic and do-it-yourself attitude. Grunge fashion was popularized by Kurt Cobain, lead singer of Nirvana, and quickly spread from Seattle to other parts of the United States and then to the rest of the world.

Characteristics

Though grunge music was often thought to be about depression and sloth, many of the defining bands of the genre were actually quite upbeat, with catchy hooks and melodies. Lyrically, grunge songs were often about heavy topics like societal problems, suicide, and drug addiction, but they were also sometimes just about everyday teenage angst. The music was also a reaction against the overindulgence and superficiality of hair metal bands of the 1980s.

Instrumentally, grunge was characterized by distortion and feedback, heavy guitars paired with light drumming, and occasional use of synthesizers. Grunge bands sometimes shrouded their inputs in feedback or added static effects to make them sound fuzzy. Vocalists in grunge bands typically had low, raspy voices.

The grunge scene

In the early 1990s, Seattle was the epicenter of a musical movement that would change the course of rock music forever. Grunge, a subgenre of alternative rock, was characterized by heavy guitar riffs, angsty lyrics, and a DIY aesthetic. The grunge scene was born out of the DIY punk scene that preceded it, and it was influenced by metal and hardcore punk.

Seattle

The grunge scene in Seattle was a musical movement that emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The term “grunge” was coined by music writer Mark Arm to describe the gritty, dirty sound of the music being made in Seattle at the time.

The grunge scene was anchored by a few key bands, most notably Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. These bands would go on to achieve great commercial success, helping to break down the barriers between alternative and mainstream music.

The grunge scene was also notable for its DIY aesthetic. Grunge bands often eschewed traditional modes of promotion and marketing, instead relying on word-of-mouth and grassroots efforts to build their audience.

While the grunge scene is no longer as active as it once was, its impact on popular culture is still felt today.

The grunge sound

The grunge scene was a music movement that emerged in the early 1990s, primarily in the American Northwest, and quickly gained mainstream success. Grunge bands were characterized by their loud, distorted sound and angry, often disillusioned lyrics. The genre became very popular in the early 1990s with the release of Nirvana’s album “Nevermind.”

The grunge sound was created by bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, who were influenced by earlier punk rock and heavy metal bands. These bands combined the loud, distorted sound of metal with the angsty lyrics of punk to create a unique new genre. The grunge sound quickly gained popularity in the early 1990s with the release of Nirvana’s album “Nevermind.”

Grunge bands were often critical of the mainstream music industry, and their success was seen as a victory for independent music. The grunge scene brought attention to the American Northwest and helped to make Seattle a major center for rock music. Grunge bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam also had a significant impact on fashion and culture, particularly among youth.

Grunge fashion

Grunge fashion emerged from the streets of Seattle in the early 1990s as a DIY style for music fans who were more interested in comfort than trends. The grunge look was characterized by layering, plaid shirts, ripped jeans, and combat boots.

As the grunge music scene began to gain popularity, so did the fashion. Designers like Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui featured grunge-inspired collections in their 1992 collections, and high-end stores like Barneys New York began to sell items like flannel shirts and Doc Martens boots.

While the grunge look was initially popular with young people, it soon began to be adopted by people of all ages. Grunge fashion has continued to evolve over the years and is now considered a timeless style.

Grunge music

Grunge music is a subgenre of rock that emerged in the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Grunge music is characterized by its dirty, distorted sound and its focus on personal, often dark, lyrics. The grunge scene was a response to the polished, glitzy sound of mainstream pop music. Grunge bands were often unsigned and tended to be ignored by the mainstream music industry.

Nirvana

Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987 by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. Nirvana went through a succession of drummers, the longest-lasting and best-known being Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990. Though the band was only active for about seven years before Cobain’s suicide in 1994, they are remembered as one of the most influential rock bands of all time for their generation-defining work.

Nirvana’s music typically fused pop hooks with loud, heavy guitars, blending together a variety of musical genres such as punk rock, alternative rock, heavy metal and grunge. Cobain was often noted for his poetic lyrics which reflected his personal angst, as well as social and political commentary. Nirvana achieved massive success with their 1991 album Nevermind, which topped record charts around the world and triggered an avalanche of sold-out tours. However, Cobain grew weary of the music industry and fame associated with Nevermind, causing him much personal turmoil. These tensions eventually came to a head with Nirvana’s 1993 album In Utero; though it was another critical and commercial success, Cobain felt it did not accurately represent Nirvana’s intent or live performances, leading him to ask that future releases be handled differently.

Nirvana’s brief run ended following the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994; despite releasing only three full-length studio albums in their seven years as a band, Nirvana has come to be regarded as one of the most influential and important alternative rock bands of all time. Rolling Stone named them the 75th greatest artist of all time and placed three of their albums—Nevermind (1991), In Utero (1993), and MTV Unplugged in New York (1994)—in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Their popularity brought unprecedented attention to underground music at the time and marked them as symbols of Generation X culture; Nathan Brackett writes that “with Nevermind they inspired a mass commercial movement in alternative rock that crossed over into mainstream radio.” In 2002 Nevermind was voted number 30 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time”. NME considered Nevermind to be “the greatest album ever made” in a 2002 poll commemorating British music magazine NME’s 50th anniversary.

Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam was one of the grunge bands to come out of Seattle in the early 1990s. The band’s debut album, Ten, was released in 1991 and was a huge success, selling more than 13 million copies in the United States. Pearl Jam’s follow-up album, Vs., was released in 1993 and debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. The band’s next album, Vitalogy, was released in 1994 and was also a huge success, selling more than nine million copies in the United States.

The band’s popularity began to decline in the late 1990s, but they remain one of the most successful grunge bands of all time. Pearl Jam has sold more than 32 million records in the United States and more than 60 million records worldwide. The band has won five Grammy Awards and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Soundgarden

Soundgarden was one of the most successful grunge bands of the early 1990s. The band’s dark, heavy sound was a major influence on the grunge music scene. Soundgarden’s breakthrough album, “Badmotorfinger,” was released in 1991 and featured the hit single “Rusty Cage.” The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Soundgarden as one of the leading grunge bands. The band’s follow-up album, “Superunknown,” was even more successful, reaching #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling more than five million copies in the United States. “Superunknown” featured a number of hits, including “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman.” Soundgarden continued to enjoy success in the late 1990s with the release of their last album, “Down on the Upside.” The album was not as successful as their previous releases, but it still sold more than two million copies worldwide. Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, but they reunited in 2010 and have since released a new album, “King Animal.”

The legacy of grunge

It’s been more than 25 years since the grunge scene exploded out of Seattle, and its impact is still being felt today. Grunge not only changed the sound of music but also the look, the attitude, and the business of rock. It also had a huge impact on the fashion world. Let’s take a look at how grunge changed the music world.

The grunge look

When it came to fashion, grunge was the antithesis of the flashy style of the 1980s. Grunge fashion was all about comfortable, inexpensive clothes that were easy to wear. Flannel shirts, jeans, and doc martens were all common grunge fashion staples. The “uniform” of the grunge look was often completed with a pair of round wire-rimmed glasses.

The grunge sound

The Grunge sound is typified by heavy guitars and a “thick” or “fat” sound. Grunge guitarists crank their amplifiers to high volume to create a “wall of sound.” This signature distortion sound was created by turning up the gain (or distortion) on their guitar amps to the point where the waveforms from the guitars became distorted, creating a harsh, fuzzy, and feedback-laden tonal quality. Due to the loud volume necessary to create this sound, grunge bands generally favored small, tube-driven combo amplifiers. Many Grunge guitarists would also thrash their guitars violently while playing, causing strings to break and adding to the distorted sound.
