The best hip hop music of 2016 was a diverse mix of sounds and styles, with everything from trap and mumble rap to politically-conscious and socially-conscious rap enjoying mainstream success. Here are our picks for the best hip hop artists of 2016.

Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar had an incredible year, releasing the critically acclaimed album “untitled unmastered.” He also won a Pulitzer Prize for his work on the album “DAMN.,” making him the first non-classical or jazz artist to win the award.

Chance the Rapper
Chance the Rapper had a breakout year in 2016, thanks to the release of his third mixtape, “Coloring Book.” The mixtape was streaming-only, but that didn’t stop it from becoming one of the most popular releases of the year. It was also nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Rap Album.

Drake
Drake continued his reign as one of hip hop’s biggest stars in 2016 with the release of his fourth studio album, “Views.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and Drake also set a new record for most weeks at number one on the Hot 100 with his single “One Dance.”

Beyoncé
Beyoncé surprised everyone when she dropped her sixth studio album, “Lemonade,” without any prior announcement. The album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and winning multiple Grammy Awards. Beyoncé also released a visual album accompaniment to “Lemonade” that was nominated for an Emmy Award.
