Intent on pursuing a career as a rapper, he departed the series in 2007 following the release of his debut mixtape, Room for Improvement. He released two further independent projects, Comeback Season and So Far Gone, before signing to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment in June 2009.

KOD is the fifth studio album by American rapper J. Cole. It was released on April 20, 2018, through Dreamville Records, Roc Nation and Interscope Records. The album’s lead single, “The Cut Off” featuring Kill Edward, was released on April 19, 2018. The album features guest appearances from Young Thug, kiLL edward and Cole’s alter-ego Klaus.

On April 16, 2018, Cole announced the album’s title as Kids on Drugs with a picture of three prescription pills with children depicted on them via Twitter. On April 17, he revealed the artwork and release date for the album. The artwork features a young boy holding up a diamond-encrusted rabbit to his ear with a bemused expression while sitting in front of a drug tableau that includes cocaine lines, marijuana plants and assorted pills. Underneath the boy is the album’s title written in braille.

The following day, Cole announced that there would be two listening experiences for KOD: an “immersive experience” in which listeners can “choose their own path through the audio/visual piece,” and a traditional linear listening experience for those who just want to listen to the music.” He also announced that tickets for both experiences would go on sale April 20 at 10 A.M. EST through his Dreamville website.
