Previous winners

Since its inception in 1994, the Billboard Latin Music Award for Songwriter of the Year has been awarded to songwriters who have written and published the year’s most-performed Latin songs.

The award is given to the songwriter(s) of up to three songs, which must have been originally recorded and released in Spanish-language format and must have achieved airplay on radio stations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico during the eligibility period. The award is not necessarily given to the artist who performed the song; it is given to the person who actually wrote it.

Winners are determined by Billboard magazine based on data provided by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. Billboard’s criteria states that a song must be “aired on radio stations in more than 50 markets with a population greater than 1 million residents, during specified eligibility periods” in order to be eligible for consideration.

Past winners include some of Latin music’s most popular and successful songwriters such as Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Juanes, Ricky Martin, and Jesse & Joy.

How the award is determined

The Billboard Latin Music Award for Songwriter of the Year is determined by the number of weeks each song spends on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. The songwriter with the most weeks at number one during the eligibility period is named the winner. If there is a tie, the songwriter with the most number-one songs is declared the winner. If there is still a tie, the songwriter with the most weeks in the top ten is declared the winner.

What is the criteria for the award?

To be eligible, a songwriter must have written or co-written at least three songs that have been published within the award year. The song must have peaked within the top 50 of the Billboard Latin Songs chart during that time frame.
