Kirk Franklin

Kirk Franklin is an American gospel musician, songwriter, record producer, and choir director. He is known for his contemporary R&B sound and is credited with helping to shape the sound of modern black gospel. He has won multiple Grammy Awards and has had success on the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 charts. His choirs have sold millions of records and have performed for Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Franklin was born on January 17, 1970, in Riverside, Texas. He was raised in a single-parent home by his mother, Gertrude Franklin. His father, Kirk Sr., was absent from his life. When he was four years old, his mother began taking him to church where he discovered his love for music. He started singing in the choir at the age of five and by the time he was nine, he was writing songs.

In high school, Franklin joined a seven-member group called Therescent that gave him his start in the music industry. After graduating from high school, he attended Jackson State University on a scholarship but left after one semester to pursue a career in music full-time.

Franklin’s first album with The Family was 1992’s Kirk Franklin & The Family. It spent 154 weeks on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, earned Platinum certification, and won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. In 1995, Franklin released Whatcha Lookin’ 4?, which topped the gospel charts for nine weeks straight and spent a total of 46 weeks on the chart. The album won two Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance by a Duo or Group (for “Stomp”).

James Fortune

James Fortune is an American gospel musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He started his career in 2000 with the group Fortune 5. His first album with the group was titled Live through It which was released in 2001. The album was not successful and the group disbanded in 2003. In 2010, Fortune launched his solo career with the release of his album Identity.

Fortune has released a total of five studio albums, one live album, and one greatest hits album. He is best known for his singles “I Believe” and “Say Amen”. In 2015, he won a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song for “Hold On”, featuring Monica and Fred Hammond.
