Allman Brothers Band

The Allman Brothers Band was an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman (slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson (drums). The band incorporated elements of Southern rock, blues, jazz, and country music, and their live shows featured improvisation and instrumentals.

The group’s first two studio albums, The Allman Brothers Band (1969) and Idlewild South (1970), reached the top 40 of the Billboard 200 chart. Brothers and Sisters (1973), their fourth studio album, rose to number 1 on the Billboard 200, selling over a million copies and spawning their popular hit singles “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica”. The band reached new heights with Eat a Peach (1972), which featured extended instrumentals such as “Mountain Jam”, and Brother’s Trust (1991), which showcased the band’s jazz fusion influences. Shortly before Duane’s death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 at the age of 24, the band released At Fillmore East (1971), which is considered to be among the finest live albums ever made. The album features extended renditions of their songs “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and “Whipping Post”, both of which clock in at over 20 minutes each.

The band’s popularity waned in the late 1970s due to heroin addiction problems within the group; they regrouped once again in 1989 with new members Warren Haynes on lead guitar/vocals and Allen Woody on bass guitar. The newly reformed lineup released Seven Turns (1990) followed by Shades of Two Worlds (1991). In 1994 their collaboration with blues musician Ry Cooder led to trouble back home: the album was not well received by critics or fans in the US. The band went on hiatus for several years thereafter but returned with a renewed energy and focus for Hootenanny (2001) and Thank You Les Paul: A Tribute To Les Paul recorded live at the Beacon Theatre New York City on May 9th & 10th 2000 respectively which featured guests Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood joining them for “Statesboro Blues”.

The band released several successful albums and toured extensively throughout the 1980s.

Their best known lineup included Aykroyd on harmonica and vocals, Belushi on vocals, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald “Duck” Dunn on bass guitar, Matt “Guitar” Murphy on guitar, Murphy Dunne on piano, Alan Rubin (“Mr. Fabulous”) on trumpet, and Paul Shaffer as the band’s musical director. Despite their success, the Blues Brothers disbanded in 1982 after Belushi’s death from a drug overdose.

In 1998, Aykroyd and Shaffer reunited to record Briefcase Full of Blues with many of the original members of the band. The album was successful and led to a reunion tour in 1999. In 2000, Elwood Blues (Aykroyd) was killed in a car accident; however, the band continued to tour with various members until Aykroyd’s retirement in 2005.
