What we do

The Caltech Folk Music Society is a student-run organization that promotes the enjoyment of traditional and contemporary folk music on the Caltech campus and in the greater Pasadena community. We hold weekly concerts featuring local, national, and international folk performers, as well as monthly jams open to all skill levels. In addition, we offer workshops on various aspects of folk music making, such as songwriting, instrument making, and dance. We also maintain a library of folk music books, CDs, and instruments that are available for use by our members.

Why is music important?

Music has always been a part of human culture, whether it is part of religious ceremonies, used as a form of expression, or simply enjoyed as a form of entertainment. It is a powerful tool that can bring people together and help to create a sense of community. Music can also be used as a form of therapy, and can have a positive impact on mental health.

Music and the brain

Studies have shown that music can have a number of positive effects on the brain, including reducing stress, improving memory, and aiding in relaxation. In one study, researchers found that musicians had higher levels of activity in the brain than non-musicians, even when they were not actively playing an instrument. This suggests that music training may actually change the structure and function of the brain.

Other research has shown that music can help to reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and increase pain tolerance. Music therapy is increasingly being used as a complementary treatment for a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and cancer.

So why is music so good for the brain? One theory is that it activates the part of the brain that is responsible for processing emotions. Music also activates the parts of the brain responsible for movement, memory, language, and cognition. This may explain why music can have such a powerful effect on our mood and behavior.

If you’re looking to improve your mental health, learning to play an instrument or simply listening to your favorite tunes may be a good place to start.

The benefits of music

There are many benefits to music, no matter what age you are. For infants, music can stimulate the growth of the brain and help with memory. It can also help them to learn about rhythm and improve their coordination. For young children, music can help with language development, social skills and emotional intelligence. It can also boost self-confidence and creativity. For teenagers and adults, music can help to reduce stress, improve mental health and boost productivity. It can also promote physical activity and healthy eating habits.
