About the Dallas Folk Music Society

The Dallas Folk Music Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to bringing folk music to the masses. We do this through our live music events, educational outreach programs, and by supporting local and touring folk artists. We believe that folk music is for everyone, and we strive to make it accessible to all.

History

The Dallas Folk Music Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the understanding, appreciation, and performance of folk music in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

The Society was founded in 1963 by a group of music lovers who wanted to share their enjoyment of traditional folk music with others. Since then, we have been presenting monthly concerts featuring local, regional, and national performers of folk music. We also sponsor workshops and jam sessions to help musicians hone their skills, and we maintain a lending library of folk instruments and instructional materials. The Society is run entirely by volunteers.

Our goal is to provide quality folk music entertainment for our audiences and to support the folk music community in North Texas.

We also offer free concerts in the park during the summer months. These concerts are a great way to enjoy a beautiful day while listening to some great music!

Workshops

In addition to our regular concerts, the Dallas Folk Music Society also offers workshops taught by some of the area’s most experienced musicians. These hands-on classes are designed for beginner and intermediate musicians who want to learn more about playing folk music.

For the Dallas Community

The Dallas Folk Music Society (DFMS) is a non-profit organization that promotes the performing, collecting, and preserving of folk music in the Dallas area. The Society sponsors monthly concerts featuring local, regional, and national folk musicians. These concerts are open to the public and are held at various locations around Dallas.

The DFMS also sponsors an annual folk music festival, called the Old Time Music Festival, which features music workshops, jam sessions, and performances by some of the best folk musicians from around the country. This festival is held each year on the last weekend in April.

In addition to sponsoring concerts and festivals, the DFMS operates a lending library of folk music recordings and books, which are available to members free of charge. The Society also publishes a monthly newsletter, The Folk Sounds of Texas, which features articles on Texas folk music and reviews of recent recordings.

There are several levels of membership available:

Standard Membership: starting at $25/year

Includes one vote at the annual meeting, discounts on most DFMS events, a subscription to our monthly e-newsletter, and access to members-only events.

Family Membership: $40/year

Includes all the benefits of Standard Membership for two adults in the same household plus up to four children under the age of 18. Additional family members can be added for $10 each.

Supporting Membership: starting at $50/year
In addition to the benefits of Standard Membership, Supporting Members receive two votes at the annual meeting (if they are over 18), a subscription to our quarterly print newsletter, and special recognition in our concert programs.

Volunteer

The Dallas Folk Music Society is always looking for volunteers to help with various tasks, both big and small. Tasks include but are not limited to:
-Assisting with events (set up, break down, manning information booths, etc.)
-Help with our website or social media
-Working on marketing or promotional materials
-Fundraising
-Grant writing
