Introduction

Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated in the United States in the 1950s. It has roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew inspiration from jazz, folk, and classical music.

The sound of rock was shaped by artists such as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley, and Bill Haley & His Comets. In the 1960s, The Beatles became an international sensation and helped to popularize rock music in many parts of the world. In the 1970s, rock music was split into two subgenres: soft rock and hard rock.

In the 1980s, hair metal bands such as Mötley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses became popular. In the 1990s, alternative rock bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam became hugely successful; Nirvana’s Nevermind (1991) is considered one of the most influential albums in the history of popular music. In the 21st century, rock music has been revived by bands such as The Black Keys and The White Stripes.
