History of KUSC

KUSC 91.5 is a non-profit public radio station in Los Angeles, California. It is owned by the University of Southern California and is the only classical music station licensed to a university in the western United States.

The station first went on the air in 1946 as KBIG-FM, a sister station to KBIG (1130 AM). Both stations were owned by Big Broadcast, Inc., a local company that also owned several other radio and television stations in the Los Angeles area. In 1965, KBIG-FM became KKLA-FM, a religious radio station. The station was sold to National Religious Broadcasters in 1971.

In 1981, the station was purchased by USC for $5 million and became KUSC. The USC Thornton School of Music operates the station. It is one of the most listened-to classical music stations in the country.

KUSC Today

KUSC is a listener-supported public radio station broadcasting to Southern California 24 hours a day. Commercial-free KUSC offers three music streams: Fine Arts, Classical and Popular music.

KUSC’s Fine Arts music stream features in-depth artist profiles, interviews and features on composers, conductors and instrumentalists.

The Classical music stream features the world’s greatest Classical composers and performances. KUSC’s programming also includes NPR news, local news updates and traffic reports every half hour.

KUSC’s Popular music stream showcases American popular songwriting from the 1940s to today. You’ll hear artists like Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, The Carpenters, Billy Joel, Taylor Swift and Adele.
