The history of reggae music
Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggay” was the first popular song to use the word “reggae”, effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican danceable music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that originated following on the development of ska and rocksteady.
Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by regular beats on the off-beat, known as the skank. Reggae is normally slower than both ska and rocksteady. The tempo ranges from 60 to 66 beats per minute in 4/4 time signature, with guitars (played rhythmically strumming chords) typically playing on every beat or immediate off-beats (an emphasis placed on every second beat). Melodies are often freer than in ska, with chord progressions typically based around ii-V chord patterns played by a guitar or piano on the offbeats. Bass lines are similar to those found in rocksteady: often occupying////the upper range of////the bass guitar’s register with roots typically on beats 2 and 4 played with a percussive slap style known as “riddim”, while usually occupying////the lower range of////the bass guitar’s register with roots typically on beats 1 and 3.
One characteristic of reggae rhythm is that there should be no more than four (before vamp sections) basic drums strokes per bar, creating an ostinato effect: three strokes for hemidemisemiquaver (16th note) triplets at 44 cycles per second; or two for demisemiquaver (32nd note) sextuplets at 22 cycles per second; or one for semiquaver (8th note) duplets at 11 cycles per second; though all these patterns may be broken by sectorial accents such as ghost notes or bass drum rolls.
