The History of Apple Music

In the summer of 2015, Beats 1, Apple Music’s flagship radio station, launched with great fanfare. The station was the product of Beats, the headphone company Apple had acquired the year before for $3 billion, and it represented the company’s first foray into original content. At the helm of Beats 1 was Zane Lowe, a veteran radio DJ hired away from the BBC, where he had become one of the most popular voices in the UK.

The birth of iTunes

In early 2001, Steve Jobs was fresh off his valedictory tour as CEO of Pixar, having just sold the computer animation studio to Disney for $7.4 billion. He had been ousted from Apple 12 years earlier, in 1985, but he had kept close tabs on the company: He served as an informal adviser to its current CEO, Gil Amelio, and in 1996 he had purchased NeXT Computer, his old software company, for $429 million, thus bringing him—and his operating system—back into the Apple fold. Jobs was also close with Jeff Robbin and Bill Kincaid, two former Apple engineers who had helped develop the original iTunes application for the Macintosh computer.

The decline of iTunes

When Apple released the first iPhone in 2007, it also introduced the App Store, which allowed third-party developers to create native apps for the first time. It was a massive success, and within a few years, there were hundreds of thousands of apps available on the App Store. Apple soon realized that music was one of the most popular categories on the App Store, and in 2008, it launched the iTunes Store for iOS, which allowed users to buy and download songs directly to their iPhones.

iTunes quickly became the dominant force in digital music, and by 2010, it was responsible for over 80% of all digital music sales. However, over the next few years, iTunes began to lose its grip on the digital music market. In 2011, Amazon launched its own digital music store for Android devices, and in 2013, Google launched its own digital music store for Android and iOS devices. In 2017, Apple rebranded iTunes as Apple Music and made it available on Android devices for the first time.

Despite these changes, Apple Music has failed to meaningfully dent Spotify’s lead in the streaming music market. As of 2019, Spotify has over twice as many paid subscribers as Apple Music.

The rise of Apple Music

Dre’s relationship with Apple

Dr. Dre, one of the best-selling music artists of all time, first made his name as a member of the iconic hip-hop group N.W.A. He later found huge success as a solo artist, producer, and entrepreneur, co-founding Beats Electronics and winning multiple Grammy Awards. In 2014, Dre sold Beats to Apple for $3 billion, making him the richest man in hip hop.

Dre has always been closely associated with Apple: his first solo album, The Chronic, was released on iTunes in 2005, and he was featured in a notorious TV commercial for the original iPod in 2006 (in which he memorably declared that “People are going to be carrying around little disks … and they’re going to be very jealous of my little iPod”). Throughout his career, Eminem has courted controversy with his graphic lyrics about violence, drugs, and sex. He’s been criticized for using homophobic and misogynistic slurs in his songs. And he’s been accused of glamorizing drug use and domestic violence.
