What is Electronic Dance Music?

Electronic dance music is a genre of music that is created for clubs, parties and other events. It is characterized by a heavy use of electronic instruments, synthesizers, drum machines and turntables. EDM artists often create their own distinctive sounds by combining different elements of various genres.

The term “EDM” was first used in the early 1990s, but the genre has its roots in the 1970s disco and 1980s club scenes. Over the past few years, EDM has become one of the most popular genres of music in the world. In 2020, EDM artists continue to dominate the charts and festivals with their catchy tunes and high-energy performances.

In a year that has been fairly tough for many people, music has been a great source of comfort for many. And what better genre to provide that comfort than electronic dance music? This genre has been around for decades and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, it seems to be getting more popular by the day. So, who are the top electronic dance music artists of 2020?

Martin Garrix

Martin Garrix is a Dutch DJ, record producer and musician. His discography consists of six singles, one remix album and two extended plays. His single, “Animals”, was a commercial success, peaking at number one in several countries including the United Kingdom, Belgium and his native Netherlands. In 2016, he was ranked number four on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs list. Currently, he is signed to Epic Amsterdam Records.


Marshmello, real name Christopher Comstock, is an American electronic music producer and DJ. He first gained international recognition by releasing remixes of songs by Jack U and Zedd. He was then signed by Skrillex’s record label OWSLA in 2016. His debut album Joytime was released in early 2017 and contained the hit singles “Alone” and “Keep It Mello”. Marshmello’s second album, Joytime II, was released in late 2017. In 2018, he collaborated with English rock band Bastille to release the single “Happier”, which became his highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 at number two. In 2019, he collaborated with South Korean boy band BTS to release the single ” Boy With Luv”, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making Marshmello the first EDM artist to have a number one debut on that chart. In 2020, he released the single “Here With Me” with British singer Chvrches and “Be Kind” with American singer Halsey.

The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers are an American DJ and production duo consisting of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. They started out by releasing remixes of songs by indie artists. The Chainsmokers’ debut single, “#Selfie”, was released on January 29, 2014, and became a top twenty hit in several countries. Their debut EP, Bouquet, was released on October 23, 2015. The album featured the singles ” Roses”, ” Don’t Let Me Down”, and ” Closer”.

In 2016, The Chainsmokers won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for their single ” Don’t Let Me Down”. In March 2018, the duo released their second studio album, Memories…Do Not Open. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The first three singles from the album, “Something Just Like This”, ” Paris”, and ” Honest” were all top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

UK sibling duo Disclosure have been on an absolute tear over the past few years, cementing themselves as one of the most exciting and popular acts in dance music. They kicked off 2020 with the release of their highly anticipated third album ‘Energy’, which debuted at #1 on the UK Albums Chart and featured standout singles ‘My High’ and ‘Birthday’. They followed up this with a series of high-profile DJ sets and festival performances across Europe and North America, including headlining sets at Glastonbury Festival and Lollapalooza.

2. CamelPhat
CamelPhat have been one of the most in-demand club DJs for years now, but it was their 2019 track ‘Cola’, featuring vocals from Ali Love, that truly catapulted them into the mainstream. 4. Floating Points
UK producer Floating Points has been making waves in the underground dance music scene for several years now, but it was his 2020 album ‘Crush’ that really put him on the map. The record received widespread critical acclaim upon its release, debuting at #3 on the UK Albums Chart and being hailed as one of the best electronic albums of recent years by publications such as Pitchfork, The Independent, and Stereogum.
