Introduction

It’s no secret that electronic dance music, or EDM, has been taking over the mainstream music scene in recent years. From festivals like Tomorrowland and Ultra to hits like “Clarity” by Zedd and “Animals” by Martin Garrix, it’s impossible to deny the genre’s growing popularity. But just how successful has EDM become?

A new report by Billboard shows that EDM is now dominating the Billboard charts like never before. In the past year, EDM tracks have occupied the top spot on the Hot 100 chart for a total of 27 weeks, more than any other genre. And on the Digital Songs chart, which measures online sales and streaming data, EDM songs have held the top spot for a staggering 40 weeks.

What’s more, EDM artists are also faring well on the Billboard 200 albums chart. In the past year, three different EDM albums have topped the chart: Avicii’s True, Calvin Harris’ Motion, and Skrillex’s Recess. And according to Billboard, EDM album sales have increased by 50% since 2012.

There’s no question that electronic dance music is having a moment right now. So if you’re not already a fan, it might be time to jump on the bandwagon!

What is electronic dance music?

Electronic dance music, also known as EDM, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals. It is generally produced for playback by DJs who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix by segueing from one recording to another. EDM producers also perform their music live in a concert or festival setting in what is sometimes called a live PA. In Europe, EDM is more commonly called ‘dance music’, or simply ‘dance’.

The popularity of EDM has grown exponentially in recent years. In 2012, around one billion people attended EDM festivals and one in five US DJs now identify as producing electronic dance music. The genre’s popularity is also reflected on the Billboard charts, where songs like Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” have topped the Hot 100.

The rise of electronic dance music

In recent years, electronic dance music (EDM) has exploded in popularity, with EDM artists increasingly topping the Billboard charts. In fact, in 2018, six of the year’s top 10 songs were by EDM artists, and the genre shows no signs of slowing down.

So why is EDM so popular? There are several reasons. First, EDM is highly danceable, making it perfect for clubbing and parties. Second, EDM is often more upbeat and positive than other genres of music, which can be appealing in today’s often stressful world. Finally, many EDM artists are very talented producers and songwriters, creating catchy tunes that are hard to get out of your head.

Whatever the reasons for its popularity, there’s no denying that EDM is taking over the music world. So if you’re not already a fan, now is the time to jump on the bandwagon!

The influence of electronic dance music

In recent years, electronic dance music (EDM) has been on the rise in popularity all over the world. The genre has been breaking through to the mainstream in a big way, and its influence can be seen in all sorts of popular music today. From pop to hip-hop to country, many artists are incorporating elements of EDM into their sound.

One place where the impact of EDM can be seen most clearly is on the Billboard charts. In 2017, seven of the top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 were by artists who identified as EDM artists or who had collaborated with an EDM artist. This was a dramatic increase from 2016, when only two of the top 10 songs were by EDM artists.

This trend shows no signs of slowing down. In 2018, five of the top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 were by EDM artists. These songs included hits like “Havana” by Camila Cabello, ” Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran, and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

The prevalence of EDM on the Billboard charts is just one sign of the genre’s growing popularity. As more and more people become exposed to EDM, its influence is likely to continue growing in the years to come.

The future of electronic dance music

In the past few years, electronic dance music has exploded in popularity and is now one of the most popular genres of music. This rise in popularity has been reflected in the Billboard charts, with electronic dance music songs taking over the top spots. In fact, in the past year, electronic dance music songs have held the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a total of 23 weeks.

This rise in popularity is due to a number of factors, including the increasing popularity of streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, which make it easier than ever to listen to electronic dance music. Additionally, many people are attracted to the genre because it is often seen as being more inviting and inclusive than other genres of music.

Despite its rise in popularity, there are still some people who are resistant to electronic dance music. However, it is undeniable that the genre is here to stay and it is only going to continue to grow in popularity in the years to come.
