Google Trends data shows an increase in searches for electronic dance music over the past five years. This growth is likely due to the popularity of EDM festivals and the rise of mainstream artists like Calvin Harris and Skrillex.

Introduction

Google Trends is a great tool for visualizing changes in search interest over time, and can be especially helpful for understanding how new genres of music emerge and grow in popularity. By looking at the relative popularity of different EDM sub-genres, we can get a sense for how the genre as a whole is evolving.

Unsurprisingly, “dubstep” was the most popular EDM sub-genre in Google searches over the past five years, with a peak in March of 2012. But while dubstep’s popularity has declined slightly since then, searches for other EDM genres have been steadily increasing. In particular, searches for “trap music” have more than quadrupled since 2012, while searches for “electro house” have more than doubled.

This growth in popularity is likely due to the rise of social media and streaming services like SoundCloud and Spotify, which have made it easier than ever for consumers to discover and listen to new music. As EDM continues to grow in popularity, we can expect to see even more diversity in the types of music that people are searching for.

What is EDM?

Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is a type of music that is typically produced by DJs and producers. It is characterized by its fast tempo, often 140 beats per minute or more, and its heavy use of synthesizers and other electronic instruments. EDM has been growing in popularity in recent years, and Google Trends shows that this growth is continuing.

Origins

EDM is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres made largely for nightclubs, raves and festivals. It is generally produced for playback by disc jockeys who create seamless selections of tracks, called a mix, by segueing from one recording to another. EDM producers also perform their music live in a concert or festival setting in what is sometimes called a live PA. In Europe, EDM is more commonly called ‘dance music’, or simply ‘dance’.

The term “electronic dance music” and the initialism “EDM” were both coined in the 1980s, though neither term achieved widespread popularity until the 1990s. In the 2010s, mainstream EDM achieved significant commercial success following a breakthrough occurred in early 2013 with “dancefloor fillers” such as Avicii’s “Wake Me Up”, Calvin Harris’ “I Need Your Love”, Alesso’s “Heroes (We Could Be)”, Sebastian Ingrosso and Tommy Trash’s “Reload”, David Guetta and Showtek’s “Bad” and Martin Garrix’s Animals. These songs helped propel a string of hits throughout 2013–14 from artists including American duo The Chainsmokers, whose song “#SELFIE” became one of the best-selling singles in various markets; Dutch DJ Hardwell; Dutch House duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike; and French DJ and producer David Guetta.

Characteristics

The defining characteristics of EDM are:
-Repetitive beats
-Heavy basslines
-Synthesized sounds

EDM is often produced with software such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, and Reason. It is generally created by DJs who then perform it live at nightclubs, festivals, or concerts.

The popularity of EDM has grown significantly in recent years, as evidenced by Google Trends data. In 2012, there was a significant spike in searches for the term “EDM,” and interest has continued to grow steadily since then.

EDM’s Popularity

Google Trends has shown a steady increase in searches for “electronic dance music” over the past five years. This indicates that EDM is growing in popularity. The music genre has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks in part to the popularity of electronic music festivals.

Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc., based on Google Search, that shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages.

The website was created by Nate Tyler. It has been live since January 2007. The service can be used to compare the relative popularity (based on data from Google) of this keyword over time.

Social Media

Social media has played a big role in the rise of EDM. Platforms like SoundCloud and YouTube have made it easier than ever for new artists to share their music with the world. And as EDM has become more popular, social media has become an increasingly important way for fans to connect with each other and stay up-to-date on the latest news and events.

In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile EDM festivals and events that have helped to raise the profile of the genre even further. The most notable of these is probably Ultra Music Festival, which is one of the largest and most well-known electronic music festivals in the world. But there are also many smaller festivals and events that have contributed to the growing popularity of EDM.

One of the things that makes social media such an effective way to promote EDM is that it allows fans to connect with each other and share their love of the music. In addition, social media platforms like YouTube and SoundCloud provide a great way for new artists to get their music out there and reach a larger audience.

Conclusion

From the data, it is clear that there is a growing interest in electronic dance music worldwide. This is likely due to the popularity of electronic music festivals and the rise of EDM DJs as celebrities.
