Music Genres

There are many different types of music out there. But, sometimes it’s hard to find new music that you’ll like. If you’re looking for something new to listen to, here are some recommendations of folksy indie music to add to your playlist.

Indie rock

Indie rock is a genre of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom and North America in the 1970s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US started to sign to major label contracts, use of the term “indie rock” became less common in the 1990s. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and a growing importance of the Internet, some indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.

Indie rock developed from various sources including punk rock (which directly influenced many early indie rock bands), power pop, new wave, college rock, and noise pop; all of which were mostly played on independent record labels by bands whose popularity was confined mostly to certain regions of their respective countries. With the breakthrough of Nirvana and the popularity of grunge and Britpop in the 1990s, major record labels began investing heavily in these new genres. In many cases they would simply poach artists from independent labels; Nirvana being one notable example. This led several independent labels to resurface (such as Sub Pop) as well as new genres such as lo-fi emerge.

Indie pop

Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. Originally used to describe independently released singles and albums, the term became associated with the development of punk and new wave-influenced rock music in the UK during the 1980s. Indie pop was dominated by singer-songwriters and groups who were influenced by punk, as well as artists who combined punk with other styles, such as post-punk, new wave, ska, and power pop.

The term “indie pop” was first used in the late 1970s by British music journalist Caroline Coon to describe independent record labels that released singles rather than albums. These labels were influenced by punk rock and new wave music, and they typically released short run 7-inch singles rather than albums. In general, indie pop artists have a DIY approach to their music; they are often associated with independent record labels, DIY culture, and an aesthetic DIY ethic.

The genre evolved in the United Kingdom during the 1980s with the development of punk and new wave-influenced bands such as The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, Lush, Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Suede, Britpop emerged as a response to perceived drawbacks of indie pop; specifically that it was too dominated by singer-songwriters and lacked “rock & roll swagger.”

Singer-songwriter

Singer-songwriters are musicians who write, compose, and perform their own musical material, including lyrics and melodies. There are many subgenres of singer-songwriter, such as country, folk, indie pop, and some rock music.

Some notable singer-songwriters include:
-Bob Dylan
-Neil Young
-Carole King
-John Lennon
-Paul Simon

Singer-songwriters typically create songs with personal narratives or emotions. The songs often reflect the artist’s feelings or tell a story. The lyrics are usually written by the artist, and the music is often created to complement the lyrics.

Singer-songwriters perform their own music either with a band or solo. They may also play other people’s songs during their sets.
