With so many talented folk music bands out there, it’s hard to keep track of them all. Here are five up-and-coming folk music bands to watch in 2012.

She & Him

Who are they?

She & Him is a musical duo consisting of singer-songwriter Zooey Deschanel and folk musician M. Ward. They formed in 2006, and have released three studio albums and one holiday album. Their first album, Volume One, was released in 2008 and their second album, Volume Two, was released in 2010.

Deschanel is also an actress, known for her roles in films such as Elf (2003), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Bridge to Terabithia (2007), 500 Days of Summer (2009), Yes Man (2008), and Our Idiot Brother (2011). She has also appeared in television shows such as Bones (2005-2017) and New Girl (2011-2018).

Ward is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He has released eight solo studio albums since 2001. He has also collaborated with a number of other artists, including Jenny Lewis, Neko Case, and Conor Oberst.

What type of music do they play?

Though their name might make them sound like a cutesy act, She & Him is Indie Folk duo comprised of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel. The pair met in 2006 when Deschanel was cast in a movie that Ward was scoring. They hit it off and decided to record an album together, Volume One, which they released in 2008 on Merge Records.

Their second album, Babel, was released in 2012 and won the 2013 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
