The CD Review Process

Folk Music CD reviews can be a great way to get honest feedback about a new CD release before you purchase it. The process is simple: listeners review the CD and then post their thoughts and ratings on an online forum. This way, other potential customers can read the reviews and make an informed decision about whether or not to buy the CD.

How We Review

We take a three-tiered approach to reviewing CDs. In the first tier, a member of our staff listens to the entire CD and determines if it is something we would generally recommend. If it is, we pass it on to the second tier. In the second tier, a different member of our staff listens to the CD in its entirety and rates it on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest possible rating. This second reviewer also writes a brief summary of his or her thoughts on the CD. If both reviewers in the first two tiers recommend the CD, we pass it on to the third and final tier. In the third tier, our panel of experts (which consists of music industry professionals, college professors, and Grammy-winning musicians) listens to excerpts from the CD and discusses its merits. We then compile their thoughts and rating into a final review, which is published on our website.

What We’re Listening For

In order to give each album a fair hearing, our reviewers take the following steps:

1. Review the album’s accompanying press materials. This includes the album’s press release, which contains information about the artist as well as quotes from the artist or other people involved in the making of the album; a biographical sketch of the artist; and, in some cases, additional background information about the album itself.

2. Listen to the album in its entirety at least once.

3. Review specific tracks on the album, taking note of those that particularly stand out (positively or negatively).

4. Assess the album as a whole, taking into account both its individual tracks and its overall flow and cohesiveness.
