Ramin Djawadi, the composer behind the Game of Thrones soundtrack, has revealed that he’s been working on a special album featuring covers of some of the show’s most iconic songs by well-known metal bands like Mastodon and Trivium. The album, titled For The Throne, is set to be released on April 26th, just a few weeks before Season 8 premieres on April 14th.

What Game of Thrones music sounds like

Game of Thrones is known for its epic battle scenes, and the music that accompanies them is just as epic. Ramin Djawadi, the show’s composer, creates music that is both beautiful and heart-pounding, and it perfectly sets the tone for the show. Now, some heavy metal musicians have taken Djawadi’s music and given it a metal makeover, and the results are amazing.

The original Game of Thrones soundtrack is composed by Ramin Djawadi

The original Game of Thrones soundtrack is composed by Ramin Djawadi and published by Varèse Sarabande. In Djawadi’s score, he tries to “capture the overall feel of the show”,[1] using a orchestra with some traditional instruments such as hammered dulcimers, whilst also incorporating synthetic sounds. For example, in the main title theme, arayan mode is used to give a “frozen” feel to the music.[2] The soundtrack for the first season was nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 2010 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

Djawadi confirmed that he would return to compose the music for the second season in 2012. He confirmed that he would use more traditional Celtic instruments such as the Uilleann pipes and bodhrán to reflect Theon Greyjoy’s storyline arc in the Iron Islands, as well as experiment with giving individual themes to different characters and pairs of characters.[3] The soundtrack for the second season was nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 2013 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.[4]

The third season’s soundtrack was released on June 4, 2013. It became available for digital download on Amazon and iTunes two days before its official release date.[5][6][7] It charted in several countries, including Australia,[8] Germany,[9] and the United Kingdom.[10] The fourth season’s soundtrack was released on CD and digital download on June 10, 2014. A limited edition vinyl LP pressing of 3,000 copies was released on July 22, 2014.[11][12][13]

The fifth and sixth seasons’ soundtracks were both released on CD and digital download on July 19, 2016 and December 8, 2017 respectively;[14][15][16] a limited edition vinyl LP pressing of 3,000 copies each was also released on August 5, 2016[17] and February 16, 2018 respectively.[18][19][20]

The soundtrack is known for its use of traditional instruments like the dulcimer

The soundtrack is known for its use of traditional instruments like the dulcimer, as well as its occasional use of more modern electronic elements. Ramin Djawadi, the composer for the show, has said that he tries to stay true to the “medieval world” feel of the show, while still incorporating more modern sounds.

The soundtrack has been praised for its ability to evoke the show’s atmosphere

The soundtrack for Game of Thrones has been praised for its ability to evoke the show’s atmosphere and add to the viewer’s experience. The music, composed by Ramin Djawadi, is heavily influenced by European classical and folk music, as well as by the sounds of war and battle. Djawadi has said that he wanted the music to reflect the “human story” at the heart of the show, rather than simply being an accurate representation of medieval life.

Many of the pieces on the soundtrack are adapted from traditional songs or folk tales, giving them a unique twist that reflects the show’s setting. For instance, “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” is a retelling of an old English ballad, while “Rains of Castamere” is based on a Celtic folk song. Other tracks, like “Battle of the Blackwater” and “A Song of Ice and Fire”, are original compositions that capture the show’s epic feeling.

No matter what your opinion is on Game of Thrones, there’s no denying that its music is powerful and evocative. If you’re a fan of the show, or just enjoy good television scores, be sure to give the soundtrack a listen.

While most of the songs on For the Throne stay true to their original form, there are some notable exceptions. The cover of “The Rains of Castamere,” for example, features an extended guitar solo that wasn’t in the original song.
