The History of the Gospel Music Channel

The Gospel Music Channel is a cable television channel that features Gospel music videos. The channel was founded in 2004 by Charles Humbard, and is based in Atlanta, Georgia. The channel is available in over 50 million households in the United States.

The Gospel Music Channel (GMC) was founded in 2000 by network president and CEO Charley Humbard. Humbard, a former singer and Nashville-based record producer, was inspired to create GMC after attending a Christian music concert with his son.

GMC launched on October 24, 2004, becoming the first 24-hour television network dedicated to gospel music. The network’s original programming lineup included music videos, concerts, variety shows, and inspirational programs.

In 2009, GMC launched “GDLA,” a live daily talk show hosted by comedian George Wallace. GDLA is produced in Los Angeles and features celebrity guests, musical performances, and topical discussions.

In 2010, GMC signed an exclusive content partnership with Sony Music Entertainment which brought Sony’s extensive gospel music catalogue to the network. That same year, GMC also launched its first scripted drama series “Hit the Floor,” about a group of professional dancers in Los Angeles.
