Grunge music is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the mid-1980s. Grunge music is often characterized by heavy guitars, distorted sounds, and lyrics that are angsty and dark. The genre was popularized by Seattle-based bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.

Where it all started

In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Seattle-based bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden (among many others) brought a new type of music to the mainstream – a grungy, guitar-driven sound that would come to be known as “alternative rock.” Although grunge had been brewing in the underground music scene for years, it wasn’t until the success of Nirvana’s 1991 album, “Nevermind,” that the genre exploded into the mainstream.

Fueled by Nirvana’s unexpected success, alternative rock quickly became one of the most popular genres of music in the early ’90s. And with the rise of grunge came a new wave of Seattle-based bands that would help define a generation, including Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Hailed as the “Sound of Young America,” alternative rock brought a much-needed breath of fresh air to the music industry – and Seattle will always be remembered as its birthplace.

The first grunge band

The fashion
